Thanks for a great season!

We’re sad to announce the team at Outside In will be taking some time to pursue other passions which means we can't dedicate the time to putting on the quality of events we have been delivering.

We've had a great couple of years and we would like to extend our thanks to everyone who's supported us. Our wonderful artwork put together by Jasmine Streatfield. Our partners worked with us to secure a great line up for this year’s events. Cultplex has been our home for two years, and the team have been more supportive than we could have ever asked the whole way through!

This means that we won't be running Outside In next winter. It may not be farewell forever just see you later.

A BIG thank you to all of our wonderful speakers and the adventures you’ve shared with us. It’s been fantastic to keep the psyche up in these winter months.

And a final big thanks to you for being a great audience. Thank you to everyone for supporting us and coming to our events for the past 2 years. Remember to keep supporting your grassroots events, venues and communities throughout the year.

And keep up the adventures!

All the best from Cait and Joe aka Team Outside In

Join us next week! ✨️

We’re delighted to be welcoming Jesse Dufton over to our side of the Pennines from Sheffield. Jesse has been the star of the climbing scene recently, featuring in Brit Rock Film Festival and working with Gore-tex and Ellis Brigham on the film Breaking Trails. Not only is Jesse an inspiring climber, he does it all without sight. He’s blind.

Since being introduced to climbing by his father at the age of two, Jesse has gained three decades of experience on rocks. His early years spent trad climbing all over the UK and bouldering in Fontainebleau led to him completing his first trad lead climb aged eleven, by which point his vision was already a blur with only 20% of his central vision remaining.

Jesse wasn’t deterred and with the help of his friends, continued on with his love of the sport, being a firm fixture of his university mountaineering club. It was during this time he met Molly, his partner both in climbing and life. The two have since climbed in remarkable places together, with Molly, a skilled climber herself, acting as his sight-guide.

In 2017 Jesse became the first known visually impaired person to complete first ascents in the Arctic. And then in 2019 Jesse lead climbed all six pitches of the classic East Face Route (E1 5b) on the Old Man of Hoy in Scotland with Molly.

Come hear more about Jesse's adventures next week!

For the final event of the season, Outside In presents Manchester-based extreme-conditions adventure filmmaker Alex Stone

Adventure filmmaker Alex Stone has spent weeks searching for elusive wildlife, sailed to remote islands and driven across continents - all as part of film projects. In this talk he takes us behind the scenes on some of his expeditions, discusses the difficulties he faced, the solutions he developed and even how he started a camera accessory engineering company along the way.

As part of his filmmaking, he has been fortunate to be involved in projects that have taken him to the most remote islands in the UK, glacial valleys in Norway and as far as Cambodia. In addition to extreme cold-weather shoots, Alex specialises in low-light, ultraviolet, infrared and thermal imaging - catching the things the human eye can’t see.

For the past five years, Alex has been working on a biopic about Captain Scott’s Terra Nova expedition. He has recently returned from his latest trip to Norway and recounts what it’s like to shoot a film in sub-zero, blizzard conditions. What failed first, the camera or the crew?

As well as their awe inspiring adventures together, Jesse is also ranked 4th in the IFSC paraclimbing ranks and competes at competitions around the globe. Amongst all of this, he also finds time to hold down a job as an engineer for a clean-energy technology company.

Come and join us in Feb to hear all about his adventures!

To round up 2024, Outside In brings Manchester born award-winning film-maker and Author Alex Bescoby to Cultplex. Alex will be regaling us with his epic journey ‘The Last Overland’ - Singapore to London in a Land Rover still kicking about from 1955.

In 1955, David Attenborough, then a young TV producer, was approached by six recent university graduates determined to drive the entire length of ‘Eurasia’, from London to Singapore. Attenborough gave the expedition enough film reel to cover their attempt. The 19,000-mile journey completed by Tim Slessor and the team captivated a nation emerging from post-war austerity. Tim’s book, The First Overland, soon became the Bible of the overlanding religion.

Inspired by the First Overland, Alex made contact with now eighty-six-year-old Tim and together they planned an epic recreation of the original trip, this time from Singapore to London. Their goal was to complete the legendary journey started more than sixty years ago in the original Oxford Land Rover.

Alex and his team soon found themselves battling rough roads, breakdowns and a constantly leaking roof to discover a world changed for the better – and worse – since the first expedition.

Alex will be giving us a behind the scenes look at the amazing 111 day journey across the world shown in his documentary broadcast on channel 4.
