Pugin and built back in 1872 for the Franciscan Order, operated as a consecrated place of worship until 1989, when the building and grounds were sold to property developers for a project that was later abandoned. The Monastery was subsequently stripped, vandalised and left tragically derelict. The Grade II* listed building was brought from the brink of destruction in 1996 by a community of volunte

ers led by Elaine and Paul Griffiths, who bought the ruinous shell for just £1, before proceeding to raise the funds urgently needed to restore this renowned architectural masterpiece. The Monastery is now back where it belongs at the heart of the community.

With just 17 guests, candlelight, exceptional food and classical renditions of Manchester’s greatest hits from the Manchester String Quartet, it was a wonderful example of how The Monastery can be transformed for smaller, more intimate events 🥰

Can you imagine these glorious spaces filled with families, laughter and the sound of children having the time of their lives? 🎪

Imagine grandparents sharing their memories of Belle Vue while little ones are off enjoying the funfair. Friends catching up over a brew. Children (or adults 😉) getting their faces painted, making things at the craft table and discovering Manchester’s history in a whole new way!

That’s exactly what we’re hoping for when our Belle Vue & Gorton FREE Family Fun Day returns on Sunday 28th June 🥰

There’ll be Belle Vue talks, memorabilia, archive film footage, a vintage bus, a children’s funfair, face painting, arts and crafts, community stalls, live music from Gorton Voice Choir and Tintwistle Brass Band, food and drink, and lots more besides.

And for those who fancy something a little different, there’s also an optional animal handling experience where you can meet everything from owls to snakes and tarantulas! 🦉🕷️🐍

So round up the grandparents, the kids, the neighbours, your friends… bring everyone down and join us for a lovely day celebrating one of Manchester’s most treasured stories!

Wellbeing seems to mean something different to everyone…

For some people, it’s a Pilates class. For others, it’s an afternoon in the garden, a chat over a brew, listening to music, or finding a quiet corner to sit in for a little bit.

One of the best things about The Monastery is seeing all of those things happening side by side.

It’s funny really, the things that help us feel our best are often the simplest! A bit of fresh air. A sense of purpose. Good company. A moment of peace.

We could probably all do with a little more of that sometimes!

So, perhaps today is a good day to share something that helps you feel good? You never know who might need the idea 🥰
