Fern and Fable Ceremonies Words for the wild ones 🌿
Independent wedding and funeral celebrant creating story-led ceremonies for people who refuse to be ordinary. Hi, I'm Emma.

LGBTQ+ inclusive, always. I’m an independent celebrant based in Manchester. I write and officiate weddings and funerals across the Northwest and beyond. With a background as a playwright and features writer, I have years of storytelling experience, so your ceremony will never sound like it's been written to fit a template. Instead, we'll work together to create something distinctive, full of personality and free from cliché.

How do you find the right wedding celebrant for you?
Obviously their location, their price and their experience may factor into your decision making but I think there's something far more important. Ultimately, one of the most important differentiators there is... is personality and how well you click. My advice? Make the personality hire!
And if you're looking for an independent wedding celebrant in Manchester or the Northwest, get in touch 🫶🏻

Come with me to in Cheadle.

This venue, set within a Victorian Mansion, has plenty of history and personality, having been built in 1861. The current owners have retained plenty of the building's Victorian charm, and there are a selection of spaces in which to hold a relaxed and intimate wedding ceremony. Exclusive use of the house is also available.

With 22 bedrooms, two bars, a restaurant, and even their own gin (!) this venue has a lot to offer.

Thank you to Ernest, Amanda and team for the warm welcome 🙏🏻

Resomation. Water cremation. Alkaline hydrolysis. Whatever you call it, this eco-friendly funeral alternative is gaining in popularity. It is legal in Ireland and Scotland but not in England and Wales, although that looks set to change.

What do you think? Would you ever choose this for yourself?

What do you remember about the first funeral you ever attended?

As a funeral celebrant, I see the ritual of funeral ceremonies - the storytelling, the music, the coming together - as critically important to both grieving and healing.

Did you know you can choose your own funeral celebrant? While this decision is often left to the funeral director, they often select from a small pool of celebrants with whom they regularly work. Your ideal celebrant might not be in that pool.

And sometimes it really matters. Especially if you have preferences. Like wanting an LGBTQ celebrant, an alternative celebrant or a celebrant with personal experience of su***de bereavement.

I'm not just saying this to promote myself. Sometimes I won't be the right celebrant either. Maybe your loved one's life was shaped by an era that a much younger celebrant would only ever know second-hand. You might rather have someone who carries that history too.

Regardless, the most important thing for me is that you make you have a choice ❤️

Did you know you can choose your own funeral celebrant?

It’s something most people don’t realise until they’re right in the middle of planning a funeral, usually while exhausted and grieving. So, I wanted to share it now, before anyone needs it.

Usually, this decision is left to the funeral director who will recommend someone from a small pool of celebrants they regularly work with. They are likely to be lovely and capable, but that doesn’t mean they are the type of person you would have chosen.

And, often, it really matters.

🔹Maybe your loved one was part of the LGBTQ+ community, and you want someone who understands that experience from the inside to tell their story.

🔹Maybe you’ve lost someone to su***de, and you’d feel more comfortable with a celebrant who has personally experienced that kind of loss.

🔹Maybe your loved one was a bit of an odd duck, someone who didn't fit the usual shape of things, who felt life more intensely than most and spent a long time working out where they belonged in it. You might want a celebrant who recognises that and who won’t tidy the edges off to make your person easier to sum up.

I’ll be honest: those examples happen to describe me. But there are times I won’t be the right celebrant for you either!

🔹Maybe your loved one's life was shaped by an era that a younger celebrant would only ever know second-hand. You might rather have someone who carries that history too, not just someone who's read about it.

If you want to choose your own funeral celebrant, you absolutely can. Many of us are active on social media, and it’s a great way for you to watch how we present ourselves and get an idea of our personalities, our lived experiences and our values.

As a funeral celebrant, what matters most to me is that you know you have a choice – whether that choice is me or someone else entirely.

📢 Did you know that in England and Wales, an independent celebrant has no legal right to marry you?

No matter how talented they are, how well they know you as a couple, or how beautifully they craft your ceremony, without a registrar present, it has no legal standing. Many couples end up paying for two ceremonies: one meaningful, one legal.

The good news is that the government has just launched its biggest overhaul of weddings law in almost 200 years, and there's a real opportunity to change this. The consultation, 'Tying the Knot: Reforming Weddings Law in England and Wales', is open to everyone.

The proposals would shift the focus away from where a wedding takes place (no more being tied to an approved building) and towards who conducts it. Couples could legally marry on a beach, in a forest, or in a family garden. And crucially, independent celebrants could finally be authorised to make it legally binding.

It’s worth noting that Humanist celebrants are widely expected to be included in the new framework, but independent celebrants are not a done deal. That's why we need people to speak up before the deadline on 24 September 2026.

I've written a blog about this, which includes all the info you need to know and a link to where you, too, can have your say. Please also share this with anyone who cares about couples having choice when it comes to their wedding:
