Our next free talk organised by the Mellor Archaeological Trust will be provided by John Glithero on Sunday the 19th July, 2.30pm in the Roman Lakes Tea Rooms: The Making of Rocket and its Rivals.

Free Event, open to all. Donations towards refreshments (for MAT) welcome.

In 1829 the directors of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway did not know how to power their railway which was then part built. The main contenders were fixed steam engines which would pull the carriages along with cables and loco-motive steam engines which were then unreliable and unproved. A competition was held at Rainhill to see if loco-motive engines could haul trains the 30 miles. The Stephenson's Rocket won, but there were rumours that Sans Pareil, the runner-up, had been sabotaged. For their Time Watch series, the BBC wanted to make a programme to prove that Sans Pareil could have won. They asked Michael Bailey and colleagues to organise a re-run of the trial. We were more open-minded about the possible result!
