THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE —

If you care about choice, fairness, and modernising marriage law, this matters.

Most people don’t realise that in England and Wales, the law still restricts who can legally marry you and where that legal ceremony can take place. Even if you choose a celebrant, the legal marriage must still be carried out by registrars — often meaning two ceremonies.

The Law Commission has recommended major reforms, and the Government has signalled its intention to move forward. A national conversation is now beginning about what these changes should look like.

Civil Weddings is a member of the Association of Independent Celebrants (AOIC). The AOIC champions independent celebrants and wants every couple to have the wedding they deserve — but without public data, we risk assumptions rather than evidence. That’s why gathering real insight from couples, celebrants, registrars, and the wider public is so important as reform progresses.

To support this, I’ve created a short, anonymous survey. It takes just a couple of minutes, and your views will help build a clearer picture of what people value in a modern marriage system.

If you’re willing, please share this post with friends, family, clients, and colleagues. We only have one chance to gather meaningful public insight — your help ensures every voice is heard.

Thank you for being part of this important conversation.

Planning a non religious wedding in England or Wales?

One of the first decisions you’ll make is whether a registrar or a celebrant leads your ceremony.
Registrars provide the legal formality, but their ceremonies follow a set script.
Celebrants offer something different:

• Personalisation
• Flexibility
• A ceremony shaped around your story

That’s why many couples choose to complete the short legal process at a register office, then enjoy a meaningful, bespoke ceremony with a celebrant on their wedding day.
Your ceremony should feel like you — not just a legal requirement.
