The village has seen so much going on today, from our armed forces protecting us, to the cake tasting in the wartime bake off, with well deserved prize winners. The fashion show was a roaring success, with CC41 clothing. Shoppers went about their daily life, the milkman did his rounds, and organisations like the WI were on hand to give good advice, how to live well, and how to take care of your hair. Who'd have thought that our friendly, happy shopkeeper at Hugget's Store would have been up to no good? Selling army ration food, petrol coupons and where did he get those ÂŁ10 notes from? Hardly surprising he was arrested!

We have a number groups around our village who make up the armed forces. They all played important roles keeping wartime Britain safe, but also assisting neighbouring France.
The RAF are well known for having protected us up in the skies, but it wasn't just about the pilots, Spitfires, Hurricanes and the Battle of Britain. Chat to our RAF men and women to find out more, and take a look inside their dispersal hut.
Moving up the hill, the Observer Corps can be found, near Dotty's Tea Room. They kept an eye on our skies reporting on enemy movement, noting their height, speed and direction. Thus enabling them to calculate their destination. Our lovely group there will happily show you how their equipment works, and answer any questions. On the village green you can find The BEF, British Expeditionary Force and the Red Caps, the Corps of Military Police. The exhausted BEF have just returned from France, and Southern England is a hive of military activity. There is a plan to repel an oncoming invasion and Maidstone has been designated a NODAL position. The Red Caps are needed to help in and around Maidstone where traffic control points were set up to help the military around and through the town. But there's so much more to these two vital groups, so join them to see how they helped defend us, how they planned and plotted and what everyday life was like for the military.
In Petts Farmhouse, there is a Y station listening post. Y stations were secret British wireless intercept station set up around the country to listen in on German transmissions. There you will see various radio equipment and you may just be lucky enough to hear some transmissions coming through.

Don't forget to seek out the villagers in all the Village Buildings.
The Wagon Store is the upper storey of the building that houses the School room. It is accessed by a path infront of the Village Hall.

Here you will find our ARP Services including those who looked out for animals and pets during bombing raids called NARPAC. The LDV and the WVS will talk about their many roles here too.

The Grocer, the Hardware shopkeeper and the shoe menders will be open for business and the family in the 40's house will be cooking and cleaning and collecting a hedgerow harvest.

Petts Farmhouse is where the W.I are jamming and canning. And the Village hall houses Make do and Mend and the New Utility Clothing ranges, how to make an old hat look new knitting comforts for troops, keeping well when expecting a new baby and of course how to make the best of your rations and still eat healthily.

In times of emergency we call on various rescue services to help us out. Wartime Homefront Britain was no different with police, fire brigade etc, although we had The ARP warden or Air Raid Precautions warden then. But do you know what they did? This weekend you can see items on display and see demonstrations. Visit our fire station to see how emergencies were handled without today's technology. Keep your eye out too for the village bobby, and if he's not busy helping catch a wrong'un, ask him how he recived information that an incident needed attending. There's lots of genuine wartime artifacts to view, and some you may even be able to handle if you ask.

Now we may be a very small village, but that doesn't mean there are no dodgy dealings going on.

Last year, a German spy landed at a local beach and made his way to the village to report on our brave BEF lads.
Thankfully YOU, the public, found him out and he was swiftly arrested.

Govt restrictions are now fully in place.
Although rationing means a 'fair share for all', there are some who still want more than their fair share.

Our Ministry undercover inspectors are in the village following a tip off that some-one is profiteering from selling black market food or clothing.

Is it the shopkeepers? Is it the farmers selling butter?
Are there eggs illegally being sold?
Does the pig club keep pork from the Ministry of Food.
Can the lady in charge of the W.I jam making be keeping sugar for herself?
Is the lady in charge of the make do and mend club selling her clothing coupons for money?
Are the W.V.S. using precious petrol allowances for visiting their families in Canterbury?

All could be guilty of helping themselves or others to have more than their share.

What a year it's been in the garden in Kent!
No runner beans all summer and now I can't keep up with them. I might have to salt some down for the winter.

Luckily for us, we are delighted that our wartime gardening expert, Mr Middleton is taking up residence in the greenhouse of the 40s House during our Victory Harvest event.

With help from those working for companies such as Sutton's in the production of vegetable seeds, they kept our larders and pantry's full.

(Our own organiser's Grandfather was one such chap, exempted from military service due to his vital war work.)

Do pop up to the greenhouse to find Mr Middleton. He'll help you with any of your Dig for Victory Queries.
