Allington Castle has stood beside the River Medway for more than 700 years.

The castle we see today was largely built between 1279 and 1299 by Stephen de Penchester, a powerful judge during the reign of Edward I. In 1281, the king granted Stephen and his wife Margaret permission to fortify their home with stone walls and battlements.

But the history of the site goes back even further. A Norman castle was built here in the 12th century, before being destroyed following a rebellion against Henry II.

With its towers, crenellated walls, medieval courtyards and gardens stretching down towards the River Medway, the castle looks as though it belongs in the pages of a storybook.
