Blue skies ,early frost and a promise of a sunny few days. Hurrah !
Madly potting the remaining bare root stock and getting ready for the summer planting season with thousands of bedding plants about to burst into flower.
We have concluded our compost trial. The good news is that the overall quality is better than last year and that the best of the peat free composts matched the performance of those containing peat. As last year the Clover and SylvaGrow composts gave the best results followed by Jacks Magic and Miracle gro , with plants in Westlands organic peat free compost the laggards.

With the birdsong, early blossom and the sound of bees on the lungwort the long anticipated ,much hoped for ,arrival of spring has embraced us. It certainly feels that way on the nursery as the number of people visiting has increased dramatically.
We also have our nesting Mallards back and they definitely approve of our new wildlife pond ; it will be full house when the family of up to 13 take to the water. [ We had in mind frogs when we put the pond in]
New stock include plug plants and seedlings, young vegetable plants , herbs , the first tomato plants and lots of flowers and arrangements for mothering Sunday.
We are again running a compost trial to compare the quality of the main brands available. Last year Sylvagrow and clover produced the best results.

Snowdrops are available in pots of 10 bulbs [£2.99]or loose in the green in bundles of 25 [£6.25]
Seed potatoes are available loose and can be purchased in the number you require. [All varieties £2.45 per kg]

Even in mid January the arrival of Snowdrops, Seed Potatoes mild weather and a hint of sunshine combine to shift the dial.Spring is just round the corner. Lovers of nature are irrepressible at this time of the year as we welcome the first flower the robin in full voice and more light.

We have a great range of fruit and ornamental trees in stock, they are also bare rooted field grown stock from British nurseries. We have plunged them into our beds and we lift them when you have chosen what you want, they you can pop them straight into your garden. 🪏
We also have some bulbs and flowering primroses in our greenhouse. Lots to look forward to next week also, with more bulbs and Shrubs arriving.🌷

Let it snow ? Nope its wet ; very wet. Undaunted we have unpacked our treasure chests of bare root plants and healed them into our well drained raised beds. Apple,Pear,Plum trees blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes, raspberry canes lots of ornamental trees [ 14 varieties of ornamental cherry trees] and roses.
Glamorous? No. Satisfying definitely.
Back to Christmas now with flower arrangements, house plants and planted containers taking centre stage.
