I know that some of you couldn't make last night's concert and it's such a pity as it was a stunning performance by the Greenwich Trio and flautist Boris Bizjak - one of those truly memorable evenings. Not only did we witness exceptional musicianship from each of the four performers but we were presented with a programme that encompassed considerable variety - from the charm and comparative lightness of Shostakovich's 5 Pieces to the robustness and passion of the Piano Trio in D minor by F***y Mendelssohn, and not forgetting the challenge of Wolfgang Rihm's Fremde Szene III. The cherry on the cake was to hear another of Richard Sisson's compositions - Amo, Amas, Amat, which for me evoked many images as I was listening to the eight variations. I think it was the fourth that made me think of the use of fifes and drums accompanying armies marching into battle. The Mendelssohn Trio required such mastery of all the instruments but I was particularly transfixed by Yoko Misumi's total command of the piano especially evident in the first movement which required such energy, concentration and dexterity. I hardly dare breathe and was quite relieved that the second movement appeared to allow her some respite.
The applause at the end of the concert when the final note was played was hearty and warm for both the musicians and for Richard as composer (and chairman). It was a triumph of an evening.
