The Fellside Flower Company

The Fellside Flower Company We grow seasonal, scented cut flowers in Cumbria: Friday Flower deliveries, gift bouquets, weddings,

At the Fellside Flower Company in Cumbria we grow and sell naturally beautiful cut flowers for florists, weddings, events and for anyone who simply loves fresh flowers on their table. Located between the Pennine and Lake District Fells, we grow a wonderful variety of British cut flowers which reflect the seasonal changes. Our flowery season runs from May to October when fresh herbs, foraged hedger

ow foliage and wildflowers compliment our blooms, as well as natural willow wreaths at Christmas. If you'd like flowers with that just picked look, delicious scent, and locally available - from a single stem, to a bouquet, to a bucket full - then we'd love to chat to you about how we can provide flowers you will love.

A hot week calls for a bit of flexibility - selecting blooms that can cope (sorry mint, that means you were off the list) & adapting colour schemes.

These five buckets of DIY flowers were off to dress . Thanks to for extra stems of orange geum. Perfect to coordinate with the orange and blue table decor, along with our cornflowers, sweet rocket, cooling white snowball bush, dainty aquilegia, forget me nots and contrasting wine-coloured peonies from Lincolnshire.

For Tom and Thomas’s buttonholes sweet William picked up the colour of the peonies, and I couldn’t resist some more teeny blue forget me nots. It may be a heatwave but let’s keep the romance! 💙

Back to flower farming reality this week after all the excitement and optimism of Chelsea. A heatwave in May - lovely as it is to see the sun on a bank holiday! - is not ideal.

Picking flowers is a job to be done in the cool, so tomorrow’s wedding flowers were picked at dusk on bank holiday. They’ll feature this cheerful geum (but that’s all you’ll see tonight, I don’t want to spoil the surprise 🤫)

There are seedlings to resuscitate and new plantings to keep from drying out, and this flower farmer is unable to function in 30 degree heat! And no, I still haven’t taken the straw duvets off the dahlia beds!!

It’s far from normal. The numbers are very worrying.

Wish me luck! 🥵 E x

A Silver Gilt medal for at the Chelsea Flower Show!

The whole team behind this really did all of us members proud. The public enthusiasm was incredible and it was such a pleasure to be an Ambassador at the show today. After some great tv coverage of the ‘First flower farm to come to Chelsea’, people have been seeking us out in the Great Pavilion.

Occupying a 20ft x 15ft plot the mini flower farm is a living showcase of the diverse crops British flower farmers can grow in May. Coupled with jaw dropping floral columns highlighting skilful and sustainable floristry.

Added to which, the news that flower farming now has an official Standard Industrial Classification or SIC code thanks to campaigning by is causing unlikely great excitement.

We all looked the part in our botanical aprons. The ‘exploded greenhouse’ and sustainable floral mechanics were skillfully made by . The charming runner ducks from nearly stole the show. And the foundation of all the planting was compost from Sustain Wiltshire and Mr Crappers Potting Shed. All of whose support enabled us to show just how flippin amazing British flower farms are at RHS Chelsea!

Getting the timing right for planting bulbs ‘in the green’ has caught me out for a year or two. The usual time for planting bulbs is in the autumn, but bulbs such as snowdrops and bluebells are best planted while growing, typically just after flowering - hence ‘in the green’.

However, we really lack shade in our field (worse problems to have, I know!) so we’ve had to create it with shrubs and trees in a scheme. 7 years later (see before & after 📷) they’ve grown sufficiently ‘woodland-like’ to provide the right conditions for snowdrops and bluebells.

This year I got the timing right and have planted hundreds of snowdrops and the (native) bluebells are on their way here soon.

All this has increased biodiversity, added pathways and habitats for wildlife as well as providing me with stems for cutting and coppicing. Right now these woody areas are fresh green and the blossom is fabulous!

Now the finishing touches are planted I hope we’ll enjoy them next spring!

Brown bulbs were buried deep;
Now, from the kind old earth,
Out of the winter’s sleep,
Comes a new birth!

Flowers on stems that sway;
Flowers of snowy white;
Flowers as sweet as day,
After the night.

So does Narcissus bring
Tidings most glad and plain:
“Winter’s gone; here is Spring—
Easter again!”

The Narcissus Fairy,
Cicely Mary Barker

Thankyou for choosing us for your Mothers Day flowers! To our loyal customers and those who’ve just found us 👋 we love to bring a little flowery joy and every single order means a whole lot to our small business.

If you received some, here’s your public service announcement:
make sure you’ve popped them in a favourite jug or vase (they’ll be much happier than in the box, which you can recycle or return to us), keep trimming those stems to keep the tulips from wandering and watch the blooms open 😍.
And thankyou, Emma 🤗 x
