Trippy hand lettering art and record-related rambles

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of painting one of my trippy hand lettering murals on the rooftop of Jealous Gallery & Print Studio 🧡

I’ve been reading a lot of Alan Watts this year and really wanted to paint this phrase somewhere large, so it was a right treat to get to paint it up here.

Second photo is one I took just as I had finished painting, and I love how surreal it looks with the shadow of the fence across it and the moody dusk sky behind.

This year has been all about making my hand lettering BIG and now I can also tick making it high up off the list. Definitely want to do more walls like this.

I decided at the start of this year that it was time to see what happened when I put my energy more wholly into ‘Thirteen Scorpios’. and I’ve done so much more than I ever thought possible. But now it’s time to go one further.

I don’t know what 2027 looks like but I do know that this is finally something I can say with my chest: my dreams are worth chasing.

This started as a post about me wanting to book festive murals and then I started writing an overly wordy caption, so instead I turned it into a carousel.

I spent my youth being told repeatedly that a creative life wasn’t an option, and then ten years at home with my children, feeling like I’d missed the boat over and over. But here I am. Doing it, every day, good and bad, right or wrong. But doing it.

And if you want to help me do it, you can either:

a. Book me for a mural or window, commission a logo or poster or some other amazing custom artwork
b. Shop in my online shop
c. Tell your friends about me! Think my artwork would work well for a local business? Send them my way, or send me to them.

And just to reiterate, I particularly would love to book festive window murals for November. I’m based in Worthing (West Sussex) but love to travel, so if you’ve got a window and you want my art on it, you know what to do… (send me a message here or via email or go to my website for more details, obvs).

Right, I think that’s enough words for one evening.

I am very excited to share that from 20-25 October I will be having a solo exhibition of my hand lettering artwork at Colonnade House which I have called SAY IT WITH WORDS 🧡

Following a lifetime of trying to make sense of the world through words - both as a hand lettering artist and a writer - this exhibition brings together new artworks alongside never-before-exhibited pieces.

And, even more excitingly, as well as the artworks on display, I will also be in situ in the gallery creating live artwork for the entire duration of the exhibition. That includes painting the windows!

Inspired by my experience creating public murals, I hope to incorporate word-inspiration from conversations that I have with visitors into the artworks I create during my time at Colonnade House.

Details of private view to come, and of course more information on the new art I have created; but swipe to see a glimpse at what to expect, including a snippet of a new piece, and of course my infamous painting trousers that I will inevitably end up working in while I’m there.

Also in a beautiful bit of serendipity, I’m thrilled to say this falls within Weird Worthing | Folk Fringe too.

More details on all of it soon. I’m equal parts excited and nervous, and I fully intend to bring you all along on the journey as I countdown to this over the next two weeks. 💕

Four points in one, delivered in one shot at sort of hyper speed… I’m nothing if not consistently myself on here at least.

I love that Instagram advice says to plan your reels, make them specific and have a clear thread and message. But it’s been a whirlwind week in a whirlwind month that’s involved all the feelings at once, and as my options today were either this or no post at all, I’m working with what I’ve got. Seriously though can I get a gold star for the one shot video??

Spending the afternoon painting a Halloween window in my favourite coffee shop was definitely exactly what my soul needed today. And I even managed to squeeze in a little tribute to Keke too. 🧡

Thanks for inviting me to create this for you - it is always a pleasure.

To other local businesses: hit me up for your own Halloween/spooky season/autumn windows. I’ve always got space in my diary for artwork related to my favourite time of year. And/or you could be super organised and book me for Christmas, just sayin’.

October is nearly here so I thought I’d round up all the DJ slots I’m doing and put them in one place. Of course I made the poster myself, and yes that is literally just my handwriting*. If it works, it works.

Anyway, exciting news: I’m starting a new regular slot at the delightful Black Dove in Brighton, and I’ll be there on the first Friday of every month. And in October you get me for a bonus slot on the 24th too.

And I’m continuing my residency at the charming A L P H A B E T Brighton too, on the second Saturday of the month.

And in amongst that I’m back behind the joana at one of my faves The Windmill Brighton on Friday 16th.

You’ll also find me flinging records about for the VERY exciting PICKLEFEST that Tern by Johnny Stanford are running, at the brunch on Sunday 18th.

And I am of course very excited to be doing my first solo slot at onair_1btn on Friday 30th.

And then I’m heading up to the inimitable The Strines Nightingale to spend the best day of the year spinning spooky things at the Halloween Party, of course, where I will definitely be grinning like I am in that last photo.

Woo!

*The love for hand lettering stems from the fact I was the kid who liked making her handwriting/schoolwork look as neat as possible. I’d rather like to go back and tell my younger self where the obsession has led me!

Last year I had the pleasure of being commissioned to paint this mural for Cellar Arts Club CIC which is a nonprofit, volunteer-run arts organisation in Worthing. And through that experience, I learned more about what they do; and then this year I ended up joining the committee. So while doing a volunteer bar shift this week, I got to take this picture and a little video of my artwork. The Cellar is also the place that RIVAL SELF and I held the first two GNOME nights.

Life takes you on the most unexpected journeys but I am so grateful for the ways it has unfolded for me lately. 🩵

Ps I was born in 1983 so I’m afraid you will still catch me making the peace sign in pictures far more often than I should 😂

The former gifted child to obsessive Google review reader is a strong pipeline, I’d say. But also I can say with confidence that my clients leave these 5* reviews cos I am good at what I do. That’s a nice feeling, you guys.
