Back in the booth for the 3rd edition of Bring Back The Funk! 🪩

Always a pleasure spinning for the dance community. Funk & disco all day for locking, popping and waacking battles, with a little party business in between.

Big love for all the energy and kind words throughout the day! 🙏🏾

Recently picked up one of my holy grails after four years of regret for not buying it the last time I had the chance! 😮‍💨

The soundtrack to Toei’s absolutely unhinged Spider-Man (1978) is peak 70s TV energy, up there with the likes of The Six Million Dollar Man and Mission: Impossible. Big percussion, flutes, strings, and funky guitar.

Chumei Watanabe - Eccentric Sound Of Spider-Man (1984)

Special thanks to Reuprecordz.com for this one!

Everyone talks about city pop… but there’s a lot more to dig. Here’s a few cuts worth knowing.

Soul Scream – 黒い月の夜
Yakkle ft. Shing02 – I Miss You
Coma-Chi – Stand Alone
Scha Dara Parr – Summer Jam ’95
M-Flo – Quantum Leap (DJ Watarai Remix)

Had to give this anime soundtrack its own post. This is one of the earliest and greatest examples of hip-hop in anime, featuring the talents of Nujabes, Fat Jon, Shing02 and more.

Where Cowboy Bebop blended jazz with a futuristic setting, Samurai Champloo combined feudal-era Japan with hip-hop, jazz and funk to create one of the most stylistically cool anime ever made. Funny enough, both shows share the same director: Shinichirō Watanabe.

This is only a small sample from the Samurai Champloo collection. The amount of music produced for this series was vast and spread across several releases (I don’t even own all of them), so we’ll definitely come back to this later.

Stay tuned.
