We are sad to hear of the passing of Mark Houghton. British born martial artist, star and subject of “I Am the White Tiger” and 1980s Hong Kong stuntman pioneer.
Mark was a long time practitioner of the Hung Gar system and brought that flair with him to scores of Hong Kong film appearances in the 1980s and 1990s. He will be remembered as one of a rare breed of overseas martial artists to make it in the Hong Kong film industry as an action performer.
Working as a regular player with his mentor Lau Kar-Leung on “Aces Go Places V” and “Tiger on the Beat 2”; both Lau and Jackie Chan on “Drunken Master 2” — and with Lau’s brother Lau Kar-Wing on “City Cops” and “Skinny Tiger, Fatty Dragon” in which Mark got to face off against Sammo Hung in the finale.
In 2022 Mark supported our Birmingham screening of “Drunken Master 2” with a video introduction and Hung Gar demonstration by his students. This was treat for the audience and added authenticity to a classic screening. Our thoughts are with his daughter Charlene Houghton who carries on his legacy in action cinema.
