Next week weā€˜ll be on the road across three countries! How exciting is this ?! We’ll visit St. Gallen & Rorschach, Bregenz and Konstanz and at each stop weā€˜ll learn in an interactive and engaging way about event design and how to apply these principles to our events. And what more exciting is that we’ll also host a session at the Würth Haus Rorschach about how to work collaboratively with the local stakeholders and on your event design. Questions will include: 1. Is event design a question of Budget? 2. At what stage of the inquiry do you start talking about event design? 3. In your opinion and based on your experience, is event design supplier led or , or both? Super excited for this opportunity to cover this topic in depth as event design is high on our community’s agenda this year!!

Interesting industry insights from the morning sessions at the Konferenz Eventforschung in Chemnitz last week.
Opening remarks were by Dr. Peter Neven from .messewirtschaft who introduced the landscape of B2B communication in the digital space that happens between 1. Participants to Participants, 2. Exhibitors to Exhibitors and 3. Participants and Exhibitors and the key word was ā€˜evolution’. It’s not about the future of events, but the future of communication.
-
The first keynote was by Jan Kalbfleisch from who talked about the challenging landscape of exhibitions, using the case of giant CEBIT that to no ones anticipation suddenly discontinued. Then he talked about why they created the and the challenges around the process of transitioning from FAMAB Awards to BrandEx.
-
Second talk was by Matthias Schultze from who talked about mindset when it comes to the future of exhibitions. He said that events are a communication tool that companies use to reach their goals. He highlighted that attendees travel for content delivered at conferences and therefore knowledge hubs in destination play a key role in attracting business travellers.
-
The next talk was by Colja Dams from who presented the five mega trends: 1. Customer, customer, customer, 2. Data in all forms, 3. Marketing drives sales, 4. Live, 5. Shift of the creepy line, meaning how data is obtained and the cultural difference in the tolerance to such ā€˜intrusive’ methods, e.g. apps that can track your location in the shop and send targeted adverts based brand positioning. Seriously scary!
And lastly he presented that LIVE comes before marketing automation and that live marketing intelligence is business intelligence.
Very insightful morning with industry leaders!!

Thursday and Friday I was in Chemnitz to attend and present together with at the 11. Edition of the Konferenz Eventforschung. This is the most important academic conference for the event industry in Germany and is organised by . The topic this year was ā€˜Events and exhibitions in the digital age’ and Friday was dedicated to presentations from the academia and industry to address this topic and share case studies. I presented with the topic ā€˜social media influencers in B2B events’ and used the Event Planners Talk Conference as a case study, detailing how from a # it evolved to become an event. The full case study will be published in the follow up publication, and Doreen and I will present this case at future industry events, so I’ll keep you posted on the dates and publication of the case.
-
Other topics presented were also very interesting and highlighted some of the challenges the exhibitions encounter today. It was mentioned that the needs and the goals of the clients remain the same, but ā€˜evolution’ is the solution (e.g. - we don’t talk about a carriage but mobility), move and adapt to the changing digital landscape

March 2017 at with we were among the first industry events to address the topic of influencer marketing in the MICE industry. A lot has developed since and it’s rewarding to see that we were among the pioneers to list the challenge and opportunities and these at such a significant global travel trade show!
-
Here are some insights from 2017 about the future of influencer marketing in the MICE industry: ā€šIt’s recommended to work with established bloggers who have a proven track record. Those who enter the business because they think they can travel the world for free and don’t treat the blog as a business will be out very quick. Spotting fake followers and engagement will become even easier. The ones who will survive are the ones who are constantly updating about the changes in the social media landscape. As social media came it was for free and now either you spend a lot of money or drop out. The same might happen with influencers. With the increasing regulations about disclosures it will take the fun and spontaneity out of it. While traditional media numbers are also going down there is a clash between the new and the old media and sometimes the influencer can provide a better content and match than a journalist. Influencers bring a new set of skills including photography, writing and video that destinations can leverage.

What other trends do you foresee ?

Top highlights from a recent event in London at -> Q: Why is it that advertising agencies are obtaining long-term contracts and why is the events industry mistrusted? Why do event agencies need to pitch for even the smallest activities? For example, it’s difficult for an event agency to obtain a contract for more than a project because that contract will remove some of the risks entering a pitch.

A: suggested to ask the client why and suggest working on a retainer basis. In any mature industry, clients are looking to reduce the number of suppliers. The multi-year contracts are out there, you just have to ask, and you’ve got to make your intentions known.

Say ā€˜we’d love to do your events, and the best to get out of your events agency is a multi-year contract, that will also reduce costs.’ You’ve got to have a reason for clients to trust you and to understand that your interest is in making them better and bringing value to their business. ā€˜If clients think that you try to sell them things they are going to say ā€˜no’. But if you demonstrate how you can add value, knowledge and experience then you can have a multi-year contract.’

Over-tourism is currently an urgent topic being discussed by travel professionals globally. It’s addressed mainly on the leisure travel side, without sufficient coverage on the MICE front. Therefore, we wanted to tackle this issue and examine possible approaches to help event planners solve the problems destinations face due to over-tourism and suggest solutions. There are popular destinations which have a high influx of travellers, and other destinations which need this particular piece of business because they require the economic benefits that a healthy and sustainable tourism flow can bring. At a recent event during the organised by we hosted a panel discussion with and about ā€˜Over-tourism and the MICE industry: more responsibility, better partnerships and changing mindsets’ - you can read the full blog article on The MICE Blog, and we’d love to continue the discussion going with your and find ways for more sustainable MICE travel, let us know your thoughts
