On the last day of the first ever ESEA Heritage Month initiated by .n, celebrates the ESEA people who came to work for the NHS circa the 1960-70s.
I was so happy to be asked by to contribute some flowers to this shoot. Becky's initiative holds a special place in my heart since my own mother came to London from Malaysia as teen to work as a geriatric nurse for the NHS.
'Ingat ingat' means both to 'take care' and to 'remember' in the Philippines and Malaysia. From the Windrush generation to Brexit, from embracing Emma Raducanu as 'one of our own' to heartlessly rejecting desperate refugees who's situation we directly contributed to, it seems as though Britain's flip flopping between conveniently recognising the value of foreign labour and it's relentless anti-immigrant sentiment may never end.
Please go and check out at until 10th October and let the sentiment of 'ingat ingat' ring true within you - let's recognise and continue to insist on an inclusive version of Britain's history, and let's remember to always take care of each other, whoever that other may be.
