Shire Hall Museum stands as one of Dorset’s most significant historical landmarks, a place where justice was once served – and sometimes cruelly denied. Built in 1797, this courthouse was the center of law and order in Dorchester for over 150 years, witnessing countless trials that shaped the region’s legal history. Perhaps the most famous case held within these walls was that of the Tolpuddle Martyrs in 1834, a group of farm workers whose controversial sentencing for forming a trade union sparked national outrage. Their trial is remembered today as a turning point in workers’ rights.
Over the decades, Shire Hall saw the fates of both the guilty and the innocent decided within its imposing courtroom. Beneath the building, cold, cramped cells once held prisoners awaiting trial, some of whom never saw freedom again. These underground spaces remain much as they were centuries ago – dark, silent, and filled with an unsettling energy.
