Happy New year, I think it’s still ok to say that to people you haven’t seen in a while. I am back although I still haven’t reached the end of my emails and have just checked that everything is still alive.
I feel so lucky that I get to go away away for Christmas and new year. Although the journey there and back is always epic it is very restful when we are there. I seem to have only taken photos of sunsets and the view from my bedroom window.
First sunset
Favourite walk
Evening light
Walking on the other side of the peninsula
Christmas Day sunset
Washing the linens

Another walk

What a morning to wake up to in west Cork.
We headed west yesterday.

Having felt really upset by the world news on Friday night. Yesterday with we planted an orchard of quince trees. It is not to be under estimated the act of planting trees and the heart warming effect it has on your soul, to plant a tree in soil and all the hope for the future it promises of exquisite blossom and bountiful harvests. I can think of two people who have obviously never planted a tree in their lives.

The trees are planted in a far corner of the field that had previously been covered in bramble’s and during the winter is apt to get very wet. These are conditions quinces love having traditionally been grown on riverbanks.

I am dreaming of the woodland bulbs I’m going to plant under the trees over the coming years.

Thank you for starting the project with your strimming skills. Thank you to the planting team yesterday who made planting 25 trees feel like a collective act of positivity. Thank you to the teens for all your clearing, matocking and digging and for setting the pace.

A few photos of yesterday and a video of what we started with in January.

Goodbye 2024
I’ll be honest the last year was mixed. I had a lot going on in my life, one child taking exams, fighting tribunals for the other one, fighting planning decisions. It all took a lot of head space and energy.

But we grew a lot of flowers and I took very few photos.

A big thank you to all the lovely florists who buy from me every week. I love working with so many creative people. We have lots of exciting plans for 2025 and lots of flowers already in sown.

Winter solstice
We always seem to spend the longest night driving west and seeing almost every hour of the darkness.
A few moments from the last couple of days.
Our Christmas window decoration always made with left overs and lots of ribbons.
A trip to see some Christmas lights and my daughter’s favourite horse.
The only wreath I managed to photograph.

A very slow beginning to 2024. Still thinking about all the wonderful times we’ve had over the last couple of weeks, walking, cooking and just enjoying the slow nature of the days and each others company.

I planted a the last few roses yesterday, I can’t wait to see them flower come June. This winter I’ve planted more shrub roses for future weddings plus 5 rambling roses to grow over the temporary poly tunnel frame which I used when I first moved to the field, (it really wasn’t a poly tunnel it kept getting getting blown over), in a couple of years it will be a mass of roses.
