This could fundamentally change weddings in England and Wales.

And it’s why independent celebrants need to be part of this conversation.

The Government is asking about ‘gimmicks’ at weddings.

The consultation asks about “gimmick-based or trivialising” elements.

I agree that genuine trivialisation should be prevented.

But unconventional doesn’t automatically mean undignified.

Context matters.

Meaning matters.

And most importantly:

The marriage matters.

Being in drag doesn’t make your marriage a joke.

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot while responding to the Government’s wedding reform consultation.

I don’t want special treatment because I’m a drag queen.

I want the same professional standards as everyone else.

Judge me on my competence.

Judge me on my conduct.

Judge me on how I treat the couple.

Not on the sequins.

Seriousness does NOT mean solemnity.
Marriage is serious.

Your wedding doesn’t have to be solemn from start to finish.

Joy and significance can coexist.

That principle matters when we’re talking about the future of wedding law.

Because if “dignity” becomes another word for “boring”, we’re going to have a problem.

MARRIAGE MATTERS

I’m a drag queen wedding celebrant.

And I take marriage seriously.

Really seriously.

I just don’t believe that seriousness requires a solemn face, a traditional venue or a conventional ceremony.

The Government is currently consulting on reforming weddings law in England and Wales.

And one of the things being discussed is the role of independent celebrants.

I’m responding as a professional celebrant — and I’d love you to understand why this matters.

Marriage matters.

Choice matters.

And the law should recognise both.

THE WEDDING REFORM CAMPAIGN STARTS HERE.

You may have seen me talking about the Government’s Tying the Knot consultation.

But what actually is it?

In simple terms, the Government is looking at how weddings law in England and Wales works and whether it should be changed to give couples more choice while maintaining the legal significance, dignity and safeguards surrounding marriage.

The proposals include changes around who can conduct legally binding weddings, independent celebrants, wedding locations, ceremony content, professional standards, regulation and safeguarding.

As an independent wedding celebrant and a drag queen , I have a particular interest in this.

But this isn’t a campaign about giving drag queens special treatment.

Quite the opposite.

It’s about asking whether we can have a modern wedding system that is:

⚖️ Properly regulated
💍 Serious about marriage
❤️ Meaningful for couples
🌈 Inclusive
✨ Personal and expressive
🛡️ Safe and properly safeguarded
🎤 Open to professional independent celebrants

Over this series, I’m going to break down the consultation one issue at a time.

I’ll explain what the Government is proposing.

I’ll tell you where I agree.

I’ll tell you where I think there are questions or potential problems.

And I’ll explore what these changes could mean for couples, celebrants and the wider wedding industry.

Most importantly, I want to have a conversation with you.

Because wedding law shouldn’t just be something we leave to lawyers.

It’s about how ordinary people make one of the most important commitments of their lives.

So let’s talk about it.

Marriage matters.

Dignity doesn’t require conformity.

And perhaps it’s time our wedding laws caught up with modern couples.
