One of those book magic moments that completely blew my mind. 📖❤️
I was on a networking call the other day when the conversation turned to my book, Watch Me Go.
A guy on the call suddenly said he’d seen me speak and remembered me talking about my parents, and how my relationship with the words “Watch Me” had changed over the years.
When I was younger, so much of my drive came from wanting to prove people wrong. Tell me I couldn’t do something and my response was usually, “Watch me.”
But somewhere along the way, I realised something.
If you’re constantly building your future to prove somebody from your past wrong, they’re still influencing the direction of your life.
For me, “Watch Me” became less about proving other people wrong and more about giving myself permission to discover what I was capable of.
Anyway, this guy told me that after hearing me speak, he’d thought of somebody in his life who needed that message.
So he bought my book and sent it to them.
And I was genuinely blown away.
Not because I’d sold another book. Lovely as that is, I don’t think one sale is going to fund my retirement. 😂
But because an idea had travelled.
Something I’d shared on a stage had stayed with somebody long enough for them to think of another person who wasn’t even in the room.
And now that person had my book.
I have no idea what happened next.
Maybe they read it and something connected. Maybe one chapter arrived at exactly the right moment. Maybe they passed it on to somebody else.
That’s the beautiful thing about writing a book.
We can count sales, reviews and rankings.
But we can’t count all the conversations, decisions and little moments that happen because somebody read something we wrote.
I can count the books. I’m much more interested in the things I can’t count.
Sometimes you put an idea into the world and it travels further than you’ll ever know.
And every now and then, one of those ripples finds its way back to you.
That, for me, is the real book magic. ❤️
