Bell Cottage Vintage China at Portland House (Cardiff) – a huge pleasure to provide our vintage china in this beautiful Banking Hall! Portland House has a handsome Neo-Classical style façade with an impressive light filled interior supported by French Echaillon marble columns. We love the Doric frieze based on designs found on ancient Greek coins in the British Museum.

We fell in love with this cake after seeing it in a magazine! So delicate so beautiful for a Spring Wedding. When we checked out the website - www.blushingcook.com – we saw much more prettiness & have fallen for the chocolate pansy cake too; especially lovely for a Winter wedding!!

LEMON & POPPY SEED BUTTERMILK CAKE
A true afternoon-tea classic – buttermilk gives this cake extra body and moisture
(Recipe source = Good Housekeeping. Written by The Good Housekeeping Cookery Team | 10 April 2012)

Ingredients
150 g (5oz) unsalted butter, softened, plus extra to grease
175 g (6oz) granulated sugar
3 large eggs, lightly beaten
Finely grated zest and juice of 2 lemons
1 tsp vanilla extract
125 g (4oz) buttermilk
1 tbsp poppy seeds
250 g (9oz) plain flour
2 tsp baking powder for the icing
150 g (5oz) full-fat cream cheese, at room temperature
75 g (3oz) unsalted butter, softened
2 tbsp lemon curd
350 g (12oz) icing sugar, sifted

Method
Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan) mark 4. Lightly grease and line a 20.5cm (8in) round cake tin with baking parchment. Put butter and granulated sugar into a large bowl and beat together using a handheld electric whisk until pale and fluffy, about 3min. Gradually beat in eggs, mixing constantly, followed by the lemon zest and juice, vanilla extract, buttermilk and poppy seeds.
Sift over flour and baking powder, then fold together with a large metal spoon. Empty mixture into the cake tin and bake for 40min or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool for 5min in tin, then take out of tin and cool completely on a wire rack.
Once the cake has cooled, peel off the parchment and transfer to a cake stand or serving plate. To make the icing, put the cream cheese, softened butter and lemon curd in to a food processor and whiz together until smooth (alternatively, whisk together by hand). Add the icing sugar and whiz again to combine. Spread over the top of the cake and decorate with crystallised rose petals, if you like.

Love these natural cake stands at a wedding in the Czech Republic – rustic wood contrasting beautifully with the delicate lace-effect of white paper doilies and the pretty colours of dainty cup-cakes. Elegant handwritten place names & fresh raspberries bobbing in champagne. Exquisite!! Photographs by kind permission of AE Photography LTD

Claire’s naked gluten-free cake made by Cooked From Scratch. A simple jam-filled sponge just like mum used to make back in the early '70s with a dusting of castor sugar, for mum’s 90-something birthday. Claire met our brief exactly with an authentic looking ‘mum-cake’ which was very moreish, and exceeded our expectation with scrumptious home-made jam filling. Well done Claire, you rose to the gluten free challenge and we loved it. www.cookedfromscratch.co.uk

My grateful thanks to Abbie Heath (Abigail Walters-Davies) of Heath Marketing (www.heathmarketing.co.uk) for meeting with Bell Cottage Vintage China (Maria Manley) last week to discuss marketing options and ideas – it was a relaxed but stimulating conversation that really got me thinking! Abbie certainly knows her stuff and is both professional & a lovely person. Thanks once again Abigail, you are a star!!
