This time of year often presents an odd state of limbo for Celebrants. Many of us have been focussed on weddings over a busy wedding season. But now that is over, what will you do?

You might have smattering of autumn/winter wedding bookings in the diary, but you “haven’t had time” to do much marketing for next year.

Which begs the question - how AGILE is your BUSINESS?

“Agility adds speed and adaptability to stability, creating a competitive advantage in uncertain conditions.” (McKinsey)

Regardless of how lovely and joyous our work is, none of it is guaranteed. The way people plan weddings and funerals changes all the time. We have to adapt to market changes and challenges and be focussed, flexible, energised, efficient and effective. Where is your income coming from and, if something happens to that income stream, what will you do?

So how agile IS your business? Think hard on this and, if you need to chat, DM me for an appointment 🗓️.

Well hello October 🎃 it sure has been a busy summer over here! I hope your season went well and that you now have time to reflect and recover.

As Celebrants, we love the buzz of celebratory ceremonies don’t we and find the whole business admin “thing” a bit of an anti-climax. But now is the time to take a look at your business, so my reflection today is all about CONTRACTS.

The first question I have for you is - does YOUR contract actually state what you will do, or do you loosely state “delivery of the ceremony”?

And secondly, could a couple come back to you afterwards and complain that you didn’t provide them with drafts or provide them with timely updates, that you didn’t deliver their love story in the way they wanted, or didn’t deliver the ceremony that they wanted?

I have ‘stages of service delivery’ in mine so that my couples know exactly what they are signing up for. I also state what my expectations are of them (to respond when requested etc etc). What do your couples understand about your service delivery and how would you be able to respond if they complained afterwards?

So take a look at your contract and, if you want to know more about my ‘stages of service delivery’, get in touch with me via a DM to book an appointment*.

*Note: I have 11 years experience as a Celebrant and have worked with hundreds of couples so I know what I need for my service delivery statement, but I am not a legal expert 😉. I wholeheartedly recommend Heather from Stanford Gould for professional legal advice 👍.

Analysis paralysis…do you suffer from this? We want perfection for our couples and families but, when you write a eulogy or script, how often do you read, re-read and re-read it, before you send it out? Are you of the opinion that “done” is better than “perfect” or do you analyse every word and every sentence?

What does success mean to you? Achieving a set goal and singlemindedly going for it regardless, or accepting that your business will evolve and you will be successful in many different ways? Read this👇:

“The three foundations of Success: bold design; frequent practice; frequent mistakes. When planning, allow yourself to think boldly and freely - later you can temper your thoughts, if necessary, to suit your purpose. Practise the skills needed to achieve your goals often and allow yourself to make mistakes, for it is often only in the missing of the mark that you discover the exact action of the target.”

You’ve done your training 🎉 set yourself up in business and off you go. As the bookings come in, you’re meeting couples and families, writing and leading ceremonies. But! 👀 How do you know how good your standard is?

Are you just assuming it’s great or do you check back? Do you watch your wedding videos or Obitus webcast videos after the event?

I’m not talking about the ‘honeymoon’ reviews - I’m talking about objective feedback from a fellow professional. So, are you humble enough to have a Celebrant friend shadow you, and give you feedback? Let me know here👇

Flying solo as a Celebrant isn’t for the faint hearted. As a self employed sole trader, there are lots of things to manage.

We are constantly walking the tightrope, trying to move forward and achieve our goals while doing all the ‘back room’ work such as accounts, marketing, networking etc - all the while trying to keep a balance in our work and home life. And sometimes we need help 🙏.

Is there one area in your Celebrant working life that you need help with - and if you’ve received help, what type was it? 🤔

The Celebrant Ninja is putting together a free two-hour social media session for a group of wonderful celebrants, in early June.

Social media is always a mystery, it never stops changing but there are some fundamentals we can learn, to help us along the way. Add a few more advanced techniques that bring the sparkle ✨and we feel a whole lot more confident in managing our social media output.

I’m looking forward to it! ✨🪄✨

On a discovery call, are you the celebrant who goes through the process and options for a wedding ceremony, bullet-point by bullet-point 😬?

Or are you the celebrant who finds out what the couple are like first and then uses visual words and phrases that key into what they are saying? Phrases such as “you will see the joy on everybody’s faces!” or “the colours you talk about will look beautiful!” or “your ceremony will truly reflect who you are!”

When you show couples or families that you look at the world in the same way they do - and that you “get” their vibe, they will view your ideas and services more positively.

And you will experience that wonderful skip in your stomach and feel that fabulous smile on your face when they sign up.

See what I did there? Go for it! 😘
