Victorian Llanelli's most famous feuding neighbours? Rev. Ebenezer Morris and William Chambers! ⚔️

According to Llanelli Story of a Town by Star tensions between the two boiled over in 1832 at the opening of Parc Eynon. William Chambers attended with friends when Rev. Morris allegedly appeared drunk, demanding free admission and berating those present, reportedly describing Chambers' family and friends as "animals". The drama did not end there. Later that day, Morris followed Chambers home to the doorstep of Llanelly House and kicked him. The incident led to the clergyman being handcuffed, brought before the courts, and fined £20 for disturbing the peace, cementing his reputation as Llanelli's very own "Fighting Parson."

Yet despite their differences, both men shared a vision for a better Llanelli. Rev. Morris championed education and oversaw improvements to St Elli's Church, while William Chambers, and his son William Chambers, Junior, helped shape the town's future through the Health Board, the founding of Llanelly Pottery, and the construction of improved housing with better sanitation in Pottery Street. Sometimes, even the fiercest rivals can leave a lasting legacy on the town they both wanted to see thrive.
