Claire, today’s for you 🫶

Today is dedicated to Claire, a wonderful human being, who instantly springs to mind when talking about books.
Claire, also known as folkiebooknerd, loved everything about books & reading and, as a longstanding member of a local book club, was no stranger to talking about the books she read.
Claire’s wife Paula was happy to recommended a book on both of their behalf. Thanks Paula!

Paula's and Claire's book recommendation is Michiko Ayoama's "What you are looking for is the library", translated by Alison Watts.

Paula says "This was a book we both loved. This book examines a series of lives and the challenges people face. As the title indicates it focuses on the importance of the books and connections which can be found in libraries. A book about the importance of small steps and how they can lead to important changes. Books, book shops and libraries were so important to Claire and she was an example of the impact of quiet conversations and finding the right book for a situation. After reading this book Claire went on to read several more in this genre enjoying the quiet, gentle fiction as part of a wide range of books she loved to read".

Too good and too important to not post again ⚡️

In July, singer Dua Lipa announced a partnership with Porto-based bookshop Livraria Lello to open a physical library for banned and censored books.

The ‘Manifesto Library’ is an extension of her Service95 Book Club and is dedicated to books that “challenge power, censorship, exclusion and dominant narratives”. It holds 100 books across four themes: power, control, voice and memory. The collection isn’t limited to women writers or translated works, but its focus on whose stories get told, and who decides, speaks directly to the questions Women in Translation month raises about whose voices get heard.

"This library is a shrine to books that have disappeared, to authors whose courage unmasks structures of power and control, and to readers who refuse to be told what book they are allowed to read," she added.

"You are invited to visit and decide for yourself what belongs on these shelves. Because sometimes the most subversive thing you can do is read a book and then talk about it."
