Open 10am-5pm, seven days a week. Bolton is one of the country’s best preserved medieval castles, situated in the heart of Wensleydale with stunning views over the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Completed in 1399 by Rich

ard le Scrope, Chancellor of England to Richard II, its scars bear testament to over 600 years of fascinating history including involvement in the Pilgrimage of Grace, Mary Queen of Scots imprisonment and a six month siege during the Civil War. As well as the new Falconry Experience, Wild Boar Park, Medieval Archery Demonstrations and Bee Keeping display, which were introduced in 2011, we now have our own flock of Wensleydale and other local rare breed sheep. Enjoy the ultimate medieval experience in the historic heart of Wensleydale.

Ingredients: potato, swede, onion, cheddar cheese, salt and pepper as well as the pastry of course.

Tea room open 10am - 4pm, admission to the castle not necessary to enjoy these truly delicious delights.

A fun and relaxed event, visitors can experience the castle in a different light. 🏰

Your historically dressed guide will introduce you to tales of previous spooky happenings in the atmospheric setting of the castle.

At one point, your lanterns will be your only source of light while the velvety darkness envelopes you.

The evening concludes with a drink by the fire 🔥 where you can share your experiences and spooky 👻 tales.

Enjoy an after-hours experience, within the walls of our medieval castle.

Minimum age for this evening event is 10 years.

Living History Medieval Agincourt Weekend 🏰

In 1415, Lord Richard Scrope, with a contingent of men-at-arms and archers 🏹 🏰from Bolton Castle stood in a wet, muddy field with the rest of the English army, numbering about 8,000 men in northern France.

The unexpected victory for the English later that day led to a boost in English prestige and dominance in the series of campaigns and battles against the French, now known as the Hundred Years war.

Come and join our living historians; find out more about the battle, try on some armour of the period and see if you would have made the grade as an English archer. Included in usual admission charges.

Halloween Fun 🎃from 19th Oct - 31st October

Our stunning five-floor castle 🏰complete with dungeon and maze, is jam-packed with spookiness this .

🧟‍♀️🧙‍♀️With something for every member of the family; witches, coffins, skeletons and some poor soul whose punishment is to spend forevermore in the stocks, are scattered around the castle ready to make you jump!

There are pumpkins throughout the courtyard and trails into the beautiful autumnal gardens to get some fresh air.

On selected dates*, historical re-enactors who will bring the story 📖alive from when the castle was at its most haunted.

*Story time at 1pm and the witches’ trial at 2.15pm on each of these days:

As if untouched by the 21st century, Bolton Castle is a superb and location. We’re a medieval castle with five floors of rooms, including a dungeon and a suite of rooms where Mary Queen of Scots was held.

With views across the Wensleydale valley, our gardens include a maze and vineyard and are also available for filming.

Recent filming includes Game of Thrones and Channel 5’s Anne Boleyn.

Event Weekend⚔️ Step into 1461: Lord Scrope’s Household at War ⚔️

Come visit Bolton Castle and immerse yourself in the turbulent times of the Wars of the Roses.

It is the year 1461, just after the bloody Battle of Towton – the largest clash ever fought on English soil. Victory went to the Yorkists, and while recovering from wounds, Lord Scrope has now ridden north to aid in the sieges of Alnwick and Bamburgh, the last Lancastrian strongholds.

While he is away, the castle household is alive with activity as they prepare to finish off the Lancastrians.
