On Friday I stepped out of my comfort zone. I’ve been playing vinyl for about 5 years now, but it’s mostly been in my studio. Since it was a 90s night for Bynofest events , it felt like the perfect excuse to dust off the turntables and give it a go.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bag of nerves all week. I know I can mix vinyl, but doing it in front of a crowd is a completely different feeling. There’s always that thought that something could go wrong. Once I got into it though, I loved every minute and I’m really glad I pushed myself to do it. If anything, it’s given me even more motivation to put more time and focus into DJing.
Most of the records I play were pressed before I was even born, but I’ve always felt a stronger connection to the music from that era. It’s the foundation of the scene we all enjoy today, so I think it’s important that our generation keeps it alive as the OGs start hanging up the headphones.
Playing vinyl is a completely different experience to loading an MP3 onto a screen. You’re flicking through records, choosing the next track on the fly, dropping the needle, beatmatching by ear and making the mix happen without technology doing the hard work for you. It’s definitely less convenient, but nothing beats the feeling of actually handling the records and listening to the music instead of staring at a waveform.
Plenty more old skool trance, house and hardcore/gabber vinyl sets coming in the future. 🎶
