Going full-time with a camera is one of the best things I’ve ever done📸

But there are definitely things I wish I understood earlier.

I wish I knew that you don’t need to have everything figured out before you start. I wish I knew that being good at the work is only one part of the job. I wish I knew that quiet months don’t automatically mean you’re failing.

Most of all, I wish I backed myself sooner.

It’s hard, unpredictable and sometimes terrifying, but building something that is actually yours feels completely different.

Being a self-employed photographer has taught me more than just how to take better photos.

It’s taught me how to run a business, trust myself, set boundaries, communicate properly, deal with quiet months, chase invoices, market myself, and keep showing up when no one is telling me what to do.

Some days it feels like freedom.

Some days it feels like pressure.

Most days, it’s a bit of both.

But every win feels different when you know you built it yourself.

Getting paid to travel with a camera sounds like the dream — and honestly, it is.

But it also teaches you a lot very quickly.

You learn how to adapt when plans change, how important preparation really is, how to tell the story of a place properly, and how to stay calm when the day inevitably gets chaotic.

It’s long days, early starts, late nights, heavy bags, tight schedules, and a lot of pressure.

But then you find yourself stood in a completely new place, camera in hand, doing the thing you always hoped you’d get to do for a living.

And in those moments, you realise exactly why it’s worth it.
