Another photo of Balmoral Hotel in Norton Way. If you look closely you can see a few women standing outside the building in this photo.

In 1909, the Balmoral Hotel was purchased by Robert Tracey, who had previously managed both the Central Hotel and the Temperance Hotel in Letchworth. Robert and his wife, Jane, operated the hotel together until at least 1919.

During the First World War, Robert Tracey was fined 10 shillings in 1916 for breaching the Lighting Order regulations. Introduced in 1915, these regulations required towns and cities to reduce visible lighting at night in order to protect them from German Zeppelin bombing raids. The measures formed part of Britain's wider wartime civil defence efforts.

What a difference a week can make! This wet Monday morning is a far cry from the heatwave we recently enjoyed. Let’s hope there’s plenty more sunshine to come.

It’s interesting to note that in Letchworth, the summer of 1912 was said to be very wet during June, July and August, following the glorious summer of 1911. 23 days of rain in June, 19 days in July and 27 days of rain in August.
