"We first heard the weaving song from Sandra Kerr on Bagpuss. It felt important for us to recognise the impact of Bagpuss in our lives, as it was one of our first encounters with folk music! We have fond memories of being sat in the living room in front of the tv, as wide and heavy as a bass drum, and being absorbed (and confused) by Bagpuss. It felt significant that our parents had been first to watch Bagpuss, to then later pass it on to us, just as folk songs are passed down through generations. Through the arrangement we aim to celebrate our collective experience watching and absorbing folk music through children’s tv, and the significance it has to our love for music!"

"Jenny Plucks Pears is an English Country dance tune published by Playford in 1651. There is a rich history of putting words to Playford tunes through the 17th century in English folk music, as often seen through Broadside Ballads. Broadsides were song sheets sold for a penny and were one of an early form of accessible media. Stories and poems were printed on sheets and the readers were instructed to sing it β€œTo the Tune of …”. This adaptability of folk song is an important part of the tradition of accessing and learning songs as well as accessing story media and literature.

The choice of poem in this case was mostly reliant on finding verse that fit the tune, as it has quite a specific rhythm. The Robert Frost poem β€œStopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” was an immediate fit, requiring no changes to fit the tune. As so often happens, the subject of this poem has a lot of bearing on how the tune is received and, while still lively, the tune becomes something more somber and serious with the addition of this narrative - this, we all feel, works rather well and led us to creating an original composition to complete what has turned into a winter landscape."

Things are quiet over at the Guild while we try to sort ourselves, budgets and life and such - however, we simply had to share some music by the incredible

Local and brilliant, her work treads a beautiful line between the stylings if Richard Dawson and Caroline Weeks. Astute and verdant jewels of heart and observation, this track is one of our faves.

Where once there was merriment we shall bring for you more - and all who missed at the last, shall know them at the next! A stunning array of Folk mastery shall see itself born at the hands of the ever loric , the glorious 11 piece that is , and from across the pond, that master of melody . See them all in the stunning setting of the Holy Trinity Church in the middle of Leicester, with ales, mead and more from . Thank you so so much to all who came to the first night at Leicester Guild Hall

We couldn't have asked for better openers to what will hopefully become a semi regular series of events. .band and were absolutely fantastic - video and audio soon.

Until then though, thanks for taking a chance on this Gleeman - and make sure you don't miss out on and at the next one! Also, huge thanks to all the staff at the Guild Hall, and for making sure the night looked and sounded great, and to everyone who helped support the night by buying posters, tickets, and being a fantastic audience.
