💒Wedding Law reform? ❤️
What does that mean?
If you were watching the news a couple
of days ago you might have seen David Lamey MP being interviewed on a boat about weddings. It was all very lighthearted and a little
silly but at the heart of it is something very important. So buckle up, I’ll explain…
At the moment, if you choose an independent celebrant, like me to create a personalised ceremony, you’ll usually also need a separate legal ceremony with a registrar. And this is exactly what the couples I work with have to do. Only last week I had this conversation with a couple who hadn’t realised this and have had to give up their choice of a ceremony they really want and settle for a perfectly good but not what they really wanted registrar ceremony.
But all that could change.
The Government is currently consulting on proposals to modernise wedding law, including the possibility of authorising independent celebrants, to conduct legally binding marriages in the future.
If these proposals become law, couples could have greater freedom to marry in meaningful locations and enjoy one bespoke ceremony that is both deeply personal and legally recognised.
Nothing has changed just yet, but it’s an exciting moment for couples, celebrants and everyone who believes weddings should reflect the people at the heart of them. And most importantly give people CHOICE!
I’ve always believed that your ceremony should be the most memorable part of your wedding day—not just the legal bit.
