In The City 004 - introduces Cruise() to hold it down for Bristol (link in bio). Louis co-runs bristol party and wrote a lovely piece for us surrounding the city’s thriving scene and culture…

“This mix is a selection of tracks from the city I’ve called home for the best part of a decade. I love Bristol because of its cultural richness for what I think is a relatively small city. The small-ish size of Bristol means you mix with people from different parts of the community and you can be exposed to a wide variety of art and music, especially with establishments like Strange Brew delivering such varied, yet consistently high-quality line ups. The soundsystem culture of the past has had a big influence on the sound of the city. And there’s a diy ethos and thirst for outsider and experimental sounds, which has led to quite an interesting and unique jumble of live and electronic music coming from this part of the UK.

Recording this mix was a nice opportunity to play a few different styles I like, but don’t usually play, to try to reflect the range of styles you can hear in Bristol. Although, it doesn’t come close to being a representation of the diversity of sounds you can hear in different pockets of the city - ultimately it’s still a mix of tracks I like. There’s also lots of experimental music being made in Bristol which I think is best experienced live, rather than shoehorned into a mix like this. A large proportion of the tracks played in this mix are unheard, unreleased or forthcoming bits that were kindly sent over by friends. There are a handful of recently released tracks in there as well as a couple of nods to the past. All tracks were produced by artists that live (or have very recently left) this fine city, aside from a couple of collaborations. I hope you enjoy. Cruise xx”

Good friend Lou George, or 'Cruise', takes us on a journey through what he describes as only a portion of what Bristol's thriving scene and culture has to offer. He wrote a lovely piece for us about where he got his inspiration and ideas from for the mix below...

As the birth place of Off The Record, Manchester is a is a city we will never lose love for. Over the years we've been fortunate enough to make the most of it's rich & diverse scene, meeting some of the brightest local talents along the way.

Someone who falls directly into that category is d. clemente. Steam radio & 1020 radio resident and Fresh from the debut of Tough Act @ white hotel w/ India Jordan, David's insight into the Manchester scene is unrivalled & we are absolutely honoured to have him contribute to the mix series, showcasing some of finest talent in the north west.

“When asked to represent Manchester in a mix I felt overwhelmed, and then I started thinking of all the lovely people I’ve met here in the last 2 years; some I’ve met briefly, some others are like family but most importantly, they are all an extremely talented bunch and I’m very excited to share them all in one place!!

Here’s 2 hours of artists key to the Manchester music scene of different ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations and social backgrounds, that are telling different stories through music, expressing themselves through words and beats.”

In The City 002 – BRISBANE

For the next instalment of the In the City Mix Series we travel down under to Brisbane, Australia.

After spending an extended period of time in the city, Brisbane is a place we hold dear in our hearts. It is a vibrant centre of culture and has a thriving, rapidly growing & often under-appreciated underground scene. From BYOB Warehouse raves, boat parties on Brisbane River or in the CBD, you can always count on good music & smiling faces. At the heart of this is the SouthBound collective.

Since their inception SouthBound have been making serious waves throughout Queensland & the rest of Aus, throwing some serious parties boasting bookings such as Pender Street Steppers, Bobby Analog, DJ Boring and most recently Ben UFO. They also happen to be some on the nicest blokes around.

One of Southbounds head honcho’s Hedley (Brayden Hedley) has agreed to take part in the mix series, which encapsulates the Brisbane scene & Southbound’s sound. Expect house, breaks and everything in between.

Introducing: In The City 001 - A monthly mix series with a purpose...

We want to exhibit and put light on DJs, Artists, Labels, Producers & promotors that you might not see on your everyday club or festival lineup. In The City was born through the realisation that dance music in general has become a bit same-y (we also guilty of this).

Our plan for this mix series: Ask a DJ/Label/Producer or Promotor to record a 1 hour mix that solely celebrates and relates to the music & culture that comes from their resided city. We will accompany this with tracklists and links to each artists’ socials or web links, and fully promote this through paid advertisement.

To kick us off in our hometown LEEDS, we have asked our good friend ‘Analyst’ (Will Davies) to record his take on Leeds.

Meet Will...
"Hey I’m Will - I’m London based and Leeds raised and currently host a show called ‘Depolarise with Will’ on Vandelay Radio, on the 4th Tuesday of each month. My music taste has been heavily informed by Tribe Records in Leeds (shoutout to the greatest record shop in the world), and my collection of music has grown largely due to records that these guys have pushed. This mix has strong ties to Leeds and all records are linked to the city in some way, whether that be through the artists themselves being Leeds based, or the labels representing them being born out of Leeds. I wanted to demonstrate a (very) small part of the enormous variety of sounds that the city has pushed over a long period of time, and I hope you enjoy it. Of course, I couldn’t leave out the main reason for my interest in music being so strong, and somewhere within the mix I had to include the greatest tribute to Alex T (aka Gary Deep) - without him the music community in Leeds would not be so strong and I’ll forever be thankful to him for guiding my tastes. Big ups to OffTheRecord for inviting me to deliver the first podcast - it means a lot :)"
