A deadly shooting at a community park in Dublin, California has left 40-year-old Jonathan McKinsey dead and his two 77-year-old in-laws in custody.
According to Dublin Police Services, McKinsey was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the suspects as Shouyong Zhang, 77, and Shili Chen, 77, both Dublin residents and McKinsey’s father-in-law and mother-in-law.
In a particularly disturbing account, multiple witnesses told CBS News Bay Area that both in-laws allegedly shot McKinsey. Witnesses said the man fired at McKinsey before handing the gun to the woman, who then also fired at him. Both were reportedly wearing masks.
The two remained nearby and were detained by officers several minutes later.
McKinsey was the head of engineering at New York Times Games and had worked for the company since January 2023.
The shooting occurred amid a contentious divorce and custody battle between McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang.
Court records show McKinsey had been charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse after an incident in which he was accused of hitting one of their children. He pleaded not guilty. Jang had also obtained a domestic violence protection order and alleged that McKinsey had abused her and their three children over a period of years.
The allegations went both ways. McKinsey later sought his own protection order against Jang, accusing her of abuse, and also made allegations involving his mother-in-law.
Police have not publicly established these family disputes as the motive for the killing, and the investigation remains ongoing.
