Our Story: Leeds House of Flowers
My floristry journey began when I was nine years old, gathering flowers and arranging them into little bunches for my family. But the true spark ignited the day I stood outside a florist’s window in Leeds, captivated by a display of the most beautiful Arum lilies. In that exact moment, I made a promise to myself: one day, I would own that shop.
Today, that childhood dream is a reality as the proud owner of Leeds House of Flowers.
Mastering the Craft Before I could buy my dream shop, I had a craft to master. A common misconception is that florists simply "play with flowers," but true floristry is built on years of dedicated study and technical skill. After completing a degree in Horticulture and working for the local parks department, I took a part-time job at a small florist in Armley. The owner, Christine, recognized my natural flair and encouraged me to formalize my training. I attended college for three years, earning distinctions every year.
That hard work opened incredible doors. Early in my career, I had the joy of creating old-fashioned, traditional floral designs for the beloved 1990s TV show Heartbeat, and later collaborated with brilliant florists in London to design grand-scale arrangements for the M&S Breast Cancer Awareness Ball.
Building a Family Business Opening my first shop was a steep learning curve—navigating the logistics of pricing up complex wedding installations and making the leap into using technology to grow the business. My first two shops were proudly named after my daughters, Poppy and Holly. But my husband and I kept working toward that ultimate goal from my childhood, eventually acquiring the well-established Leeds House of Flowers.
We’ve faced plenty of challenges along the way—including single-handedly managing five small weddings and one massive one on the hottest weekend in August while seven months pregnant—but our guiding values have remained steadfast: honesty, transparency, excellent value, and kindness.
Our Floral Philosophy When it comes to design, creating large, outstanding arrangements comes naturally to me. My personal favourites are tall bouquets featuring my beloved Arum lilies, striking winter foliages, and fragrant eucalyptus. However, my true focus is always on the client. Whether you have a specific vision or need gentle guidance through different styles, my job is to translate your ideas into something that brings real pleasure to the recipient.
I am particularly passionate about bespoke funeral work. Taking a family's vague ideas and turning them into a highly personal, unique tribute is an honour that always gives me a profound sense of creative purpose.
Rooted in our Community Over the years, the moments that stand out most are quietly profound. I will never forget a sudden call from the local Sue Ryder hospice for a bridal bouquet and buttonhole. A young man with only a short time left had arranged a special license to marry his partner. We donated the couple's flowers, along with arrangements to transform their room, and delivered them immediately. The look on his face when he saw his bride with her beautiful bouquet is a memory I will carry with me forever.
