Status Inferno is an improvising duo featuring vocalist Milana Sarukhanyan and saxophonist James Mainwaring. Born from a shared fascination with the collision of operatic and extreme vocal techniques alongside the deep, resonant voice of the bass saxophone, their music inhabits a space where narration meets the avant-garde.

Drawing inspiration from Dante Alighieri’s epic Divine Comedy, Status Inferno reimagines this literary masterpiece through a sonic landscape of free improvisation and semi-composed structures. The result is a powerful performance that traverses intensity, texture, and raw emotional expression.

Tickets for the 22nd May at the Fenton are available online and on the door, they are pay as you feel and the money goes to (more info on a previous post)

"Paying musicians as much as I can has always been a big aim for me and the New Northern bursary has allowed me to guarantee a fee to the musicians who perform at my events!"

For our fifth New Northern feature we spoke to the Leeds based promoter Anna Ross who runs an event called Offshoots. Anna impressed the Jazz North team with the ethos behind Offshoots in her New Northern application and were keen to hear how the bursary had helped to develop the night further.

song: exposed - Flo/ra

‘flo/ra’ is a modern instrumental band fronted by Flo Taylor on saxophone; using their deadname the music aims to explore complex feelings on gender, belonging and neurodivergence such as in their tune Exposed, about the complex feelings around unmasking; and Mantra, inspired by repetitive chant music.
The project draws on a wide range of musical influences of Flo’s including modern and spiritual jazz, world and folk music, rock and DNB, to create a unique twist on the conventional jazz quintet sound. flo/ra takes influence from artists such as Trish Clowes, Alabaster DePlume and Nate Smith.
