Blenheim Palace. A garden tour. The most incredible food. Alan Titchmarsh. I got all dressed up and I had the most wonderful time 🌱

(PR invite) 's Top of the Plots awards ceremony and I left genuinely inspired. Hearing the stories from this year's competition winners, learning more about the Gardena and UNICEF partnership, and just being in a room full of people who care deeply about growing and what it means to people. Truly beautiful.

You are going to want to enter next year. I mean it.

Growing sweetcorn at home is so exciting and the harvest did not disappoint! Feeling for the fullest cobs, peeling back the husk not knowing what I'd find, and it was properly perfect kernels all the way. Tried it raw straight off the cob in the garden and it was so sweet, no cooking needed.

Growing your own sweetcorn is honestly one of the most satisfying things, watching those pollen strands turn into a full cob feels like actual magic.

Seeds were 'Summer Daize' F1 from .co.uk

Growing my own sweetheart melon in the poly tunnel, cut open on pure vibes and instinct. It smelled ripe the second I walked in so I had to try it there and then, mess and all.

Spoiler: it did not disappoint, falling off the "bone" juicy and properly sweet.

Sorry for the quality on this one, it was completely impromptu, I just grabbed my phone the second I smelled it was ready, no proper setup, no tripod, just me and a melon. Sometimes the garden doesn't wait for good lighting.

Saving the seeds for next year. Now back to the tomatoes, which are a whole other story.

this rose could break the internet. but it might be without merit. 🏅
great for the grid, but dodgy odds of ever being a bestseller 👀

that's because unlike instagram, the RHS trial panel are judging on more than one thing. spent the afternoon walking the trial beds at RHS wisley , rows and rows of various varieties with no special treatment. that's deliberate, they want to see what breaks.

there were roses in full, ridiculous bloom i'd have photographed instantly. two beds along, something far less showy that had clearly just weathered the week better than anything else there.

it blew my mind how much goes into an AGM (Award of Garden Merit). repeat flowering, disease resistance, how it handles rain, even how it drops its petals when it's done. assessed over years, not just one good afternoon.
i'd always just assumed it was which one was the prettiest, but it's judged on so much more. i can't wait to come back.

Everyone sees the flowers, almost nobody sees this bit. Back in spring and then June, I visited Taylor's Bulbs' fields and watched a sea of daffodils and tulips get ready for garden centres everywhere. Once the blooms fade the real work starts, lifting, drying and grading, mostly by hand, with every bulb checked for size, firmness and health before it makes the bag.

Seeing that process has genuinely changed how I shop. I used to grab whichever bulbs were nearest the till, now I actually look out for Taylor's.

Just to say, I wasn't asked to make this or told what to say, this started from chatting to the team earlier this year and the visit came off the back of that. I was just being nosy.

Next time you're picking up a net of bulbs, that's months of growing, harvesting and hand-checking behind it.
