We are delighted to welcome Davinder and his stunning traction engine “Anjali” to the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition this October.

Davinder first began building traction engines in 1982 and has dedicated thousands of hours to the hobby ever since. One of his engines alone — the impressive 4” scale Burrell Agricultural engine — took approximately 1,800 hours to complete.

Over the years, his collection has appeared at steam rallies, museum events, GWR Toddington steam galas and community celebrations across the UK, where visitors of all ages can enjoy seeing the engines in steam and even experience rides behind them.

As one of the only Sikhs in Europe to own, exhibit and operate model traction engines, Davinder is passionate about preserving engineering heritage and inspiring younger generations to get involved in the hobby.

Davinder is fortunate to have the full support of his children and grandchildren. Even the youngest at 6 yrs old will oil and steer the engines.

Make sure you ring the bell to have a ride on “Anjali” at this year’s exhibition!

Featured Layout – International N Gauge Show - St. Andrews and Guard Bridge

Step back in time to the historic coastal town of St. Andrews, beautifully brought to life in N Gauge.

Set during the final decade of through running before closure in 1969, this layout captures a fascinating period when regular services were joined by a variety of tourist specials and rail tours—creating a wonderfully diverse mix of passenger trains.

Originally connected by a branch from the East Coast Main Line in 1852 via Guardbridge, and later linked to the Fife Coastal Railway in 1887, St. Andrews became a popular destination once railways helped revive the town’s fortunes.

This model showcases:
🔹 Scratch-built buildings based on historic photographs
🔹 Peco trackwork
🔹 Ready-to-run stock from Graham Farish, Peco & Dapol
🔹 Cleverly designed plywood baseboards with quick-assemble legs

A fantastic blend of history, craftsmanship and operation—this is one layout you won’t want to miss.

We’re pleased to welcome back Rugby Model Engineering Society Ltd (RMES) to the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition this October at the Warwickshire Event Centre.

Founded in 1949, RMES was created to preserve and pass on engineering heritage and skills to future generations. The society is based at the impressive Rainsbrook Valley Railway on a 12-acre site in south Rugby, featuring both a 7¼ inch ground level track stretching 1.6km and a raised track for 5 inch, 3½ inch and 2½ inch gauge locomotives.

Alongside regular club events, the society also hosts monthly public running days from March through to October, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the railway and enjoy rides behind the trains.

Come along to the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition from 15th – 18th October 2026 to meet the team, learn more about the society and celebrate the incredible craftsmanship and engineering skills that keep the hobby thriving.

Head Judge – Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition (MMEE)

We’re delighted to introduce David Moore, Head Judge at this year’s Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition.

David’s journey in model engineering began in childhood, learning practical skills in his grandfather’s shed and progressing through generations of railway engineering influence. From early plastic kits and model aircraft to live steam locomotives and full-scale locomotive engineering, his career has spanned both hands-on model making and professional engineering design.

A Chartered Engineer and former locomotive design specialist, David brings decades of experience across mechanical and electrical engineering, preservation, and re-engineering projects. Despite a highly technical career, he reflects a familiar truth shared by many in the hobby—much of model engineering is developed through curiosity, practice, and shared knowledge rather than formal apprenticeship alone.

At MMEE, David and the judging team place great importance on recognising:
🔹 Technical achievement and design skill
🔹 Craftsmanship and manufacturing quality
🔹 Authenticity and accuracy where applicable
🔹 The balance of home construction versus sourced components
🔹 The creativity and effort behind every entry

Competition at MMEE has always been conducted in a fair, friendly and highly respected environment, with judges carefully considering each entry to ensure credit is given where it is due.

As David notes, the exhibition is not just about awards—it is about celebrating achievement at every level, sharing knowledge across the community, and inspiring the next generation of model engineers to develop their skills and ideas.

If you would like to enter the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition, please download the entry form from the bottom of the homepage on our website www.midlandsmodelengineering.co.uk

We’re excited to welcome the ESME (Edinburgh Society of Model Engineers) to the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition for the very first time this October!

Founded as one of the oldest — and possibly the oldest — model engineering clubs in the world, the society has a rich history and a real passion for preserving the heritage of the hobby.

In 2013, the society purchased 11.5 acres of derelict woodland just outside Edinburgh, transforming it into a developing model engineering centre for future generations to enjoy. Their ambitious site includes 3½”, 5” and 7¼” ground level railways and embraces both traditional craftsmanship and modern technologies.

As a registered charity with more than 110 members, the society is dedicated to educating and engaging the community through model making, railways and the enjoyment and wellbeing that comes from creative hobbies and shared experiences.

You can meet the Edinburgh Society of Model Engineers at the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition, taking place 15th – 18th October at the Warwickshire Event Centre.

Featured Layout – International N Gauge Show - Long Hirston

Long Hirston is a unique and ever-evolving N gauge tabletop modular layout, created by members of the Northumberland Area Group of the N Gauge Society.

Originally designed as a simple four-track “tail chaser” for relaxed running at monthly Sunday meetings, the project quickly grew into something far more ambitious. Today, the layout is made up of individually crafted modules, each built to a member’s own theme—resulting in a diverse yet surprisingly cohesive display. Careful attention at the board joins ensures everything flows together both technically and visually, no matter the configuration.

Long Hirston is as flexible in operation as it is in design. The layout can run both DCC and DC locomotives, reflecting the varied approaches of its builders. Behind the scenes, a Raspberry Pi running JMRI software manages operations, with routes and trains controlled via tablets and mobile phones. There’s even partial automation in the fiddle yard, keeping a steady stream of trains moving—something visitors always enjoy.

While club running sessions see an eclectic mix of stock (true to members’ interests), exhibition appearances aim for a more consistent era and region… usually with limited success. After all—rule one always applies!

Don’t miss Long Hirston and many more fantastic layouts at the International N Gauge Show—an unmissable event for N gauge enthusiasts!

Note: the photos have been amended to include additional sky/clouds
