Featured Layout – International N Gauge Show - Beechwood

We’re excited to showcase Beechwood at the International N Gauge Show—a stunning N gauge DCC sound layout set on a busy summer Saturday somewhere in the Midlands/North of England between 1988 & 1992.

Bringing the era to life, you’ll see a mix of diesel and electric traction running in and out of a bustling 4-platform terminus station. The scene is completed with a detailed 2-road diesel depot, fuel shed, and stabling sidings—capturing the everyday rhythm of railway operations from the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Operated using iPads via the Z21 system, Beechwood blends traditional modelling with modern control technology for a truly immersive experience.

Proudly presented by members of the Bradford Model Railway Club.

Featured Layout – International N Gauge Show - Weargate Works

This DCC-operated layout beautifully captures a rural village and its local cement works in the Wear Valley of County Durham, set between 1984 and 1994.

Cement traffic is firmly the domain of Class 37s, with a variety of other freight locomotives making appearances, alongside the works’ resident shunters assisting with operations and releasing the mainline locomotives on arrival. The industrial scene is full of detail and atmosphere, reflecting the importance of the cement works to the area.

Further up the valley, the layout opens out into a charming village setting, complete with a school, level crossing, and station. Here, the sparse passenger services are in the hands of second-generation DMUs such as Pacers and Sprinters, perfectly capturing the era. Beyond the village lies a disused quarry, now flooded and reclaimed as a playground for local children, adding a unique and characterful touch to the scene. As trains pass through the landscape and enter the tunnel, they run beneath a nearby caravan park, adding another layer of realism and interest.

Every section of the layout tells part of the story, blending industry, community, and landscape into a cohesive and engaging model that rewards close viewing.

Weargate Works was built by Edward’s father, David, and is the final one he completed before his passing. It is now being exhibited in his memory— a celebration of his craftsmanship and passion for the hobby.
