Head Judge – Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition (MMEE)
We’re delighted to introduce David Moore, Head Judge at this year’s Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition.
David’s journey in model engineering began in childhood, learning practical skills in his grandfather’s shed and progressing through generations of railway engineering influence. From early plastic kits and model aircraft to live steam locomotives and full-scale locomotive engineering, his career has spanned both hands-on model making and professional engineering design.
A Chartered Engineer and former locomotive design specialist, David brings decades of experience across mechanical and electrical engineering, preservation, and re-engineering projects. Despite a highly technical career, he reflects a familiar truth shared by many in the hobby—much of model engineering is developed through curiosity, practice, and shared knowledge rather than formal apprenticeship alone.
At MMEE, David and the judging team place great importance on recognising:
🔹 Technical achievement and design skill
🔹 Craftsmanship and manufacturing quality
🔹 Authenticity and accuracy where applicable
🔹 The balance of home construction versus sourced components
🔹 The creativity and effort behind every entry
Competition at MMEE has always been conducted in a fair, friendly and highly respected environment, with judges carefully considering each entry to ensure credit is given where it is due.
As David notes, the exhibition is not just about awards—it is about celebrating achievement at every level, sharing knowledge across the community, and inspiring the next generation of model engineers to develop their skills and ideas.
