It’s a joy to play a part in a wedding day. To hear about the plans, the excitement building, to get a sneak preview of the dress, to see the couple in the pre wedding moments. And then you leave knowing that they are about to have the most amazing day and I often spend the rest of the day thinking about how the day is going. So when the photos are delivered you get a little glimpse of the magic and the joy and it’s such a treat to see what happened.

Last night I pored over Laura and Ash’s photos. Their day was totally amazing and captured so beautifully by a very talented photographer Jules Barron - Wedding Photographer

There are so many wonderful photos to share, but I am starting with a moment for the bouquet. A ruffly, romantic bouquet full of spring flowers and the best of the field.

There was even some apple blossom tucked into it. When the brief is ‘the best of the field’ this means you get all the yummiest things the season has to offer.

The field looks beautiful, the flowers are blooming but it’s so very hot.

Its too hot to work in the field. It’s actually too hot for May, it’s 16 degrees above the average temperature for the 25th May. Some of the flowers are ok, others are not looking happy at all. It’s days like this that make me think what adaptations will I need to make in the future as a grower.

I am grateful that this orange tipped butterfly was on the sweet rocket.

The butterfly is a reminder of why I leave huge sections of the farm for nature and that it’s important that I do that. I hope today the wildlife can make use of the shady damp areas of the land.

An April Wedding

Molly gave my favourite kind of brief ‘the best flowers of the season in a mix of colours.’

Which for Molly and Adam’s gorgeous day Riverlands this April meant armfuls of scented narcissi, ranunculus, tulips, butterfly ranunculus, muscari and forget me nots.

All the flowers were British grown and mostly from the farm which is just a couple of miles away from where they got married.

It’s an absolute joy to grow flowers that go to such beautiful weddings just down the road from the farm.

Congratulations to this gorgeous couple!

For the love of nature

I watched the tribute to David Attenborough last night, it was a welcomed reminder that an individual person can create change. What an inspiration Attenborough has been to me and to the principles of how we are the custodians of the farm.

Nature is truly fundamental to every decision made, the flowers we grow would not be what they are if we didn’t consider nature as a priority.

This year almost every visitor to the farm has commented on the birdsong which to me is an indicator that we are doing something right.

It’s absolutely one of my favourite things to watch, listen and learn more about nature and how it’s supporting and shaping the farm.

I will be forever grateful for the unsung hero’s of the field without whom I couldn’t grow the flowers.

This bouquet…

Has taught me three things

1. that I can feel discomfort in creating and that good as it creates learning and space to stretch your creativity.

2. The art of letting go - there are some butterfly ranunculus that acted like a whirligig and spun backwards which ever way I put them in. I had to accept one part of the bouquet does not look how I planned or hoped but it’s still beautiful.

3. A spring wedding bouquet can be any colour these darker tones work beautifully in the spring light and the almost black hellebores are perfect for our goth loving folk.

It also reminded how much I love locally grown flowers, that each unique stem creates an opportunity for magic. And that I love love love weddings and can’t wait for the ones I’ve got booked and the ones that i am yet to know are in the pipeline.

And yes I did squeeze a pansy in the bouquet!

Spring Urn

I have been daydreaming of making this urn for weeks. This week was the second workshop with Simply By Arrangement and it was all about spring flowers, using light, editing and working with flowers that moved like whirligigs.

Fresh zingy green raspberry foliage, ruffly ranunculus, beautifully scented apricot coloured wall flowers, bouncy butterfly ranunculus and finished off with beautiful pansies. All the best treats mid April has to offer.

These workshops are nourishing for the heart, soul and mind and give me space to be creative without rushing and with no pressure. Having someone as supportive as Sarah alongside you, asking gentle questions to help you explore the process and stretch yourself is truly invaluable.

Making arrangements like this is a total joy, I’m hoping that there are more urns on the horizon, I guess I’m quietly manifesting a wedding where I get to create another arrangement that celebrates the season like this.

It’s the 14th of April and with warm weather and sunshine the flowers are starting to flow through most days now and it’s a riot of colour.

Spring flowers are really wonderful and they definitely get me excited for all that’s to come.
