Many thanks to the man who donated a fantastic collection of books to Atticus yesterday. I was so overwhelmed I forgot to ask his name. The books were on a wonderful variety of subjects including how to raise a Jewish dog. For the rest, you will have to come into the shop and browse. Thank you again very much, you have helped the shop to survive another year.

A Riddle for Atticus translated by Emily Spinach.

Moððe word fræt. Me þæt þuhte
wrætlicu wyrd, þa ic þæt wundor gefrægn,
þæt se wyrm forswealg wera gied sumes,
þeof in þystro, þrymfæstne cwide
ond þæs strangan staþol. Stælgiest ne wæs
wihte þy gleawra, þe he þam wordum swealg.
A moth eats words. I found that
An odd kind of wonder, when I heard it.
So the worm swallows up the songs we write,
Little thief in the dark, devours great speeches
And everything they’re built on. Little stealing guest –
You don’t get any cleverer, for all the words you swallow.
With spacing changed:
A moth eats words.
I found that
An odd kind of wonder, when I heard it.
So the worm swallows up the songs we write,
Little thief in the dark, devours great speeches
And everything they’re built on.
Little stealing guest –
You don’t get any cleverer, for all the words you swallow.
