Wilder Floral - Dried Autumn Wreath Workshop

Join us this October to create your very own dried Autumn wreath! Working on a straw base with some of the most beautiful dried flowers in Autumnal colours and textures. We'll teach you everything you need to know to build your wreath from scratch as well as giving you handy tips and tricks on drying your own flowers and how to get the most out of your garden throughout the seasons!

All materials supplied but please do bring your own scissors/secateurs, gloves and apron to protect your clothes. Please also feel free to bring any dried materials you have if you'd like to learn how to include them from your own garden!

We are so excited to teach you how to create one of our signature Wilder wreaths this October.

In Conversation with Levison Wood

Lamport Hall are excited to host an evening with world renowned explorer, writer & photographer, Levison Wood.

His ten critically acclaimed television series have been broadcast around the world, and he is the author of twelve best-selling books.

At this event he'll be talking about his latest book The Great Tree Story, exploring how forests have shaped our world, as well as talking about his adventures and documentaries.

Levison was a Major in the British Army having served in the Parachute Regiment for 13 years. He is the Chancellor of Staffordshire University, an elected Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Explorers Club. Levison is also an ambassador and patron for several charities including UNICEF.

Happy International Dog Day!

Today we celebrate the wonderful dogs of the past and the present.

When looking at historical records it is clear the love the Ishams had for their canine companions throughout the years. Early writings by Thomas Isham (1656-1681) mention that the family owned a Mastiff. During the Victorian period Sir Charles Isham (1819-1903) bred St Bernards. His most renowned dog was called Leo. In the 20th century, Sir Gyles Isham (1903-1976) was often seen around the estate with his beloved black Labradors, Brutus, Biddy, Sophie and Jenny.

Lamport Hall remains a dog friendly site, offering a peaceful place to walk and take in the beautiful surroundings.

The recent hot weather has inspired us to pick this photograph from the 1880's for World Photography Day. Relaxing in the shade of a tree in the front park is Charles Isham, his wife Emily and their two daughters.

Photography had slowly become more accessible with the invention of film in 1884 meaning it was no longer required to carry around toxic chemicals to take a photograph. This is probably why we have these more natural, family scenes from this era rather than heavily posed studio portraits.

It's interesting to see that not much has changed since this photograph was taken!

DEATH OF A CLOWN - A Solo Performance Drama

The play lasts approximately 105 minutes including a 15 minute interval.

It is the year 1600 and one-time theatrical superstar Will Kemp is down on his luck. Reduced to long-distance morris dancing as a publicity stunt, there's only one person to blame: Will Shakespeare. T'other Will. Our Will wants to tell you about it...

Though we know frustratingly little about our greatest poet and playwright, we know even less about his pre-eminent comic actor, the extraordinary Will Kemp. We can glean from existing records that he was the most popular clown of his day, also that Shakespeare wrote his early comic roles with him in mind (most notably Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream), but further references to him are sparse.

Along with Shakespeare himself, it is known that he was a sharer (or director) of The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, who staged all of Shakespeare’s plays and who were the most successful company in London, and we also know that as a sharer he was an equal amongst equals, so could not be dismissed. And yet, in 1599, he suddenly disappears from the records, which suggests that he left the company of his own accord. Why he should choose to do so, seemingly at the height of his powers and popularity, only to vanish into obscurity (apart from his “nine day’s wonder” in 1600) is a mystery that this play attempts to unravel.

Our Magic Faraway Tree Trail returns for the last week this Wednesday-Friday, open 10am-4pm.

Taking place on Saturday 15th August, this special summer evening promises live jazz, canapés, a welcome drink, a charity auction and the chance to enjoy Lamport Hall’s beautiful walled garden while supporting a lifesaving cause.
