Rowan and Marguerite Osborne have been farming Kinclune since 2003. Daughters Virginia (Osborne Antolovi) and Aylwin (Pillai), both lawyers, work in the family business and son, James, a lawyer and investment banker, takes an active role in business planning.
Kinclune comprises two farm units, Kinclune and Gairlaw, totalling over 1000 acres of quality grassland, rough grazing, woodland, wetland and some arable.
There are three strands to our organic farming business: beef cattle, sheep and Highland ponies.
We maintain a herd of suckler cross cows which we breed with pedigree Limousin and Aberdeen Angus bulls to produce organic, Limousin and AA cross replacement heifers and stirks.
Our cattle have a short and low stress supply chain for the animals, a number of stirks are sold direct from Kinclune to an organic finisher in the Spring, the remainder are either retained for breeding or are sold direct from pasture to our local abattoir at the end of summer. We overwinter the majority of our cattle indoors, letting them out for Spring calving.
Our Llyen and Texel cross ewes live outdoor year round, and are lambed on the in-bye pasture in the spring. The lambs are sold direct from Kinclune, optimising their quality of life and reducing any stress factors.
We believe in producing best quality organic lamb and beef in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, whilst maintaining an excellent quality of life for our livestock. The progressive framework and education provided by being members of the Scottish Organic Producers Association (SOPA) enables us to achieve our goal.
We have been breeding Highland ponies for almost forty years both for showing and for working. Our stud name is โna Dailachโ meaning โof the Dellโ, relating to our roots in the Highland village of Kingussie. We maintain a small herd of mares and four stallions: homebred Glenmazeran na Dailach and Fandango na Dailach; island bred, Charlie of Muck; and German bred, Kilnacasan Glenmark. Outcross stallions have been carefully selected, bringing in the very best of bloodlines.
We show in-hand and under saddle and have many wins at the highest levels including at the National Pony Society, the Royal Highland Show, Blair Castle Horse Show and the Horse of the Year Show. Both Virginia and Marguerite are respected judges.
In addition to our Highlands we have a Clydesdale and two Shetland ponies.
We use our ponies for farm work, such as moving cattle & sheep and checking animals out on summer grazing, and the ponies enjoy it!
