Give notice of WHAT?!

Obviously, you and your partner know you are getting married. Your friends and families know. But apparently the government also needs to know… Who knew!

A clip from a beautiful wedding I coordinated earlier this year with one of my favourite parts of their ceremony. Tilly and Josh were so thoughtful throughout their day and this part really made my heart sing.

This is something that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.

For some disabled people, getting married can have a significant impact on their household finances because some benefits are means-tested and can take your partner’s income and circumstances into account.

And that can create a really uncomfortable situation.

You can love someone.
You can want to marry them.
You can want to build a life together.

…but suddenly the system can treat your partner as financially responsible for supporting you.

That can mean couples have to think very carefully about marriage because of the potential financial consequences.

And it raises a much bigger question:

Why should getting married change the support a disabled person gets because of their disability?
Marriage doesn’t make someone less disabled.
Their care needs don’t disappear.
Their equipment doesn’t suddenly become cheaper.
Their adaptations don’t become unnecessary.

Their need for support doesn’t magically reduce because they’ve said “I do”. ❤️

Of course, the rules are complicated. Not every benefit is affected by marriage, and the impact depends on the individual circumstances and which benefits someone receives.

But disabled people shouldn’t have to choose between love and financial security!

She now has a medical exemption card that will help with her prescriptions but that doesn’t cover her teeth or glasses. I have a meeting with our local MP on the 15th May and the complaint I put in about the CHC threatening us with residential care has been aknowleged. I am now looking into dutyship to hopefully have more say in Ella’s care, which will cost us thousands and can take years…

I will keep fighting for these young adults as I’ll be going through it all again in a few years time with her younger sister Chloe.

Will I see a change by then probably not but I can hope x

So for now back to weddings x x x 🌈
