🌟Fringe production North Country arrives in our Wildman Studio a month from today, playing for 3 performances only!

⚠️Plague has hit the world, wiping out most of the human population. Three teenagers from Bradford are among the few survivors: Harvinder, Nusrat and Alleyne.

🖋️A love of Sci-fi and local history led Bradford writer Tajinder Singh Hayer, in 2016, to imagine a post apocalypse world for his play North Country. The disaster he imagined was a plague, survived by three teenagers from different cultural backgrounds - a farmer, a weaver and a medic - who together negotiate a rebuilding of community over the next 40 years.

📆Here, in 2026, after a COVID pandemic Tajinder never saw coming, we are reviving his play as the centrepiece of a new writing project in which themes of the local, the remembered past and the imagined future will provide inspiration for a series of workshops alongside the production. Tajinder still teaches creative writing at Lancaster University and is sharing his approach to North Country as part of this invitation to Imagine Ilkley.

‼️‼️We are urgently looking for an actor to play one of the central characters in PRESSURE, by David Haig, to be directed by Dick Hebbert and James Kingsley

The character is Col Irving Krick (38) (USA) - Chief Meteorologist for US Forces

PERFORMANCE DATES: 29th October – 7th November 2026 in The Wharfeside Theatre

REHEARSALS: will start around Tuesday 1st September 2026 (we appreciate this is short notice But dick and James will work around your availability)

The Play:

An extraordinary and little-known true story. June 1944. As Allied forces, led by General Eisenhower, are poised to launch, the decision of whether or not to attack comes down to the most important weather forecast of all time. This play, described as “Funny, tense and deeply affecting”, explores the responsibilities of leadership, the challenges of prophesy and the personal toll of taking a stand.

The 72-hour period leading up to the launch of Operation Overlord is fraught with stress and tensions over the date of the proposed D-Day. Recognizing the notoriously dangerous conditions of the English channel, General Eisenhower employs two meteorologists to advise him on which date would be best to launch the invasion. Group captain James Stagg is the chief meteorologist, who has extensively studied weather patterns in the North Atlantic and understands the volatility of Northern European weather. American weatherman Irving P. Krick (here portrayed as Stagg's assistant) analyses historic weather patterns and cycles to predict future weather conditions.

Despite a prolonged heat wave, Stagg is convinced that the weather conditions will suddenly deteriorate sharply on June 5, the current date of the proposed D-Day, and that the planned invasion should therefore be postponed. Meanwhile, Krick believes forecasts of a calm sunny day on June 5 and believes that the plans should proceed as usual. While attempting to convince Eisenhower that his forecast of the weather conditions is correct, Stagg struggles with his own fear of potentially getting the forecast wrong.
