I bought my Pioneer DJM-600 back in 2004, after months of saving £600 while working as a kitchen porter at the Café Royal in Newcastle. I can still remember those long shifts, sweating away in the kitchen, but in my head I was somewhere else, imagining myself behind that mixer. The thought of finally owning it is what got me through the grind.
Back then, the DJM-600 was the mixer. It was the standard you’d see in clubs all over the world, used by the biggest names in the scene. I’ll never forget the buzz of seeing legends like Ben Sims, James Ruskin - BlueprintRecords & The Space DJz actually playing on my mixer at Freaky Dancing, my mate’s Techno night at the Cosmic Ballroom. Standing there, watching them tear it up on the very bit of kit I’d worked so hard to buy, it felt unreal.
