MAINTAINING PERSPECTIVE by ROGER PUGH
This morning’s result was, to say the least, disappointing. But let us not fall into the trap of over-reaction – which people all-to-often do nowadays.
As Willie Peters said afterwards, I feel for those who spent their hard-earned money to go and watch that performance – but I hope that there were other aspects of their trips that will give them happier memories.
We have been accustomed to success over the last 12 months, and perhaps we have become a bit carried away. Rudyard Kipling’s quote comes to mind; ‘meet with Triumph and Disaster, and treat those two impostors just the same’ – or more simply put, ‘never get too high, never too low.’
This morning, I departed from my usual policy of not looking at social media posts to see what fellow Rovers’ supporters were saying. I noted that there were all too many followers of other clubs, gleefully indulging in infantile jibes about our performance. It is easy to be wound up and want to respond, but they really are not worth the time or effort – ‘neither cast ye your pearls before swine’.
Roger Millward always said that good players don’t become bad players overnight – and of course he was right. But they can have bad games – and sometimes all the players can have bad games at the same time. We must trust Willie Peters and his team to find out why it happened – and to put it right. After that last 12 months, they have enough credit the bank to deserve that trust at least.
After all, tomorrow morning we’ll still have four major trophies in the cabinet – four more than all the other Super League clubs.
See you in Huddersfield.
