Wonderful news for music at Hexham Abbey!

We’re delighted to have received a generous £5,000 grant from The Ouseley Church Music Trust to support our Choral Scholars and Chorister Supervisor over the next two academic years (2026–2028).

As our Director of Music, Matthew Kelley, explains, this funding will help us nurture our young singers and support their musical development.

A huge thank you to The Ouseley Church Music Trust for helping our Abbey’s wonderful choral tradition continue to flourish!

Today marks - a celebration by the Royal School of Church Music of the amazing opportunities that being a chorister provides, with cathedrals, small parish churches, and everything in-between.

Did you know that Hexham Abbey Choir currently has around 50 members under the age of 18? We are always open to new people who wish to become part of this amazing group. We promise great church music, lots of fun, travel, biscuits and lifelong friendships.(Young members also get paid!)

Roman stones, German researchers and a crypt full of history!

We were delighted to welcome Professor Dr Catherine Teitz and Dr Thomas Heide from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany, to Hexham Abbey recently.

As part of the Corbridge Roman Stone Survey, they spent half a day in our crypt carefully documenting the Roman stones built into the Abbey. They were joined by students from Durham and Manchester taking part in the Roman Society Museum and Heritage Summer Placement Scheme.

The team also enjoyed chatting with our visitors, especially those curious enough to stop and ask what they were discovering!

They’ve only just begun… and are hoping to return in late February or mid-March to record the Roman stones built into the nave.

We look forward to welcoming them back!

LAST CHANCE TO SEE HEXHAM’S ‘HOPE AND RESILIENCE’ EXHIBITION

There are now just a few days left to visit Hexham Hope and Resilience, the moving exhibition at Hexham Abbey exploring the experiences of local people during the First World War.

The exhibition closes on Sunday 27 September, giving everyone a final opportunity to see this remarkable collection of photographs, letters, documents, memorabilia and family stories from 1915 through the devastating Battle of the Somme and the years that followed.

The exhibition also shines a light on the Home Front and the contribution of those who remained in the local community (VAD hospitals at Hexham and Corbridge, the Abbey’s own Cheer Up Club, the local community, etc.) Don't miss it!

This week and the next, do come and visit our Hope and Resilience: 110th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme exhibition.

Due to popular demand, the exhibition has been extended and will now remain on display until Sunday 27 September.

Hexham Abbey is delighted to host Threads Through Revelation, a stunning exhibition by acclaimed British textile artist Jacqui Parkinson from 13 October to 22 November.

Fourteen spectacular textile panels bring the Book of Revelation vividly to life, weaving together colour, texture and symbolism to explore themes of good and evil, conflict and hope, judgement and redemption, culminating in the vision of a new heaven and a new earth.

Many visitors say the exhibition has transformed their understanding of Revelation. Come and experience its extraordinary story for yourself.
