Get ready for the biggest community celebration of the decade! On May 8, 2025, the entire nation, along with our friends and allies around the world, will come together for VE Day 80, marking 80 years of peace.

This year, VE Day 80 will be all about bringing the peoples, families and communities of our great nation together in a spirit of celebration and peace.

The celebrations will begin at 9am with hundreds of Town Criers throughout the nation delivering a spirited VE Day 80 Proclamation, setting the tone for a day of fun and togetherness. As the day turns into evening, the celebrations will continue with music, dancing, and the sound of bells ringing out from churches and cathedrals at 6:30pm.

At 9.30pm, the night sky will be lit up as over one thousand Beacons and hundreds of Lamp Lights of Peace shine across the UK, with the flames from both, representing the ‘light of peace’ that emerged from the dreadful darkness of war.

"This VE Day 80 holds special significance as it may be the last time we have the privilege of celebrating alongside those who remember the events of WWII. As we gather to celebrate, let’s also remember to honour their legacy by committing to the values
they fought for: peace, unity, and reconciliation”.
To make this moment truly special, we invite everyone to pause, stand if they can, and join in the largest sing-along of the patriotic hymn “I Vow to Thee My Country.” Let’s fill the air with song, laughter, and the sounds of joy, making this the most unforgettable party the world has ever seen.

Join us at Hexham Abbey for a special service of commemoration, finishing with the lighting of a beacon at 9.30pm. Everyone is welcome. Book your free tickets here: https://buytickets.at/hexhamabbeypcc/1624270

A wonderful charity run by two members of our congregation. SEDCU has been supported by Hexham Abbey's annual charitable giving in 2025, and in previous years. Please do go and support his fundraising page if you are able to... Good luck Nik!

SEDCU is excited to share with you an amazing fundraising event being completed by one of our sponsors. Please read Nik's story;

Three of my brave friends and I are taking on the climb to Mount Everest Base Camp. On the 15th of March 2025, we start our journey in Kathmandu and by day 10 will arrive at Everest Base Camp. This entire trip will be challenging, and it would be a lie to say we aren’t nervous. But it is all for a good cause!

We are luckily enough to be able to sponsor and support a young deaf child through SEDCU in gaining an education and who now attends a specialist school in the Kisoro District in Uganda. This school has established facilities for the teaching of children who are deaf, visually impaired or blind, or have some other disabilities. The deaf children are taught using sign language in small, dedicated classes and enables them to receive extra attention and specialised equipment to enhance their education.

My wife and I have two profoundly deaf children, Ava-Rose and Charlie. This was identified at their new born baby screenings, and we found it very hard to come to terms with. With the help of the hospitals and our family and friends it soon came apparent that none of this mattered.

In the first six months there were a lot of tests for both children to endure. This was emotionally hard for us all at times, but we knew it would be a benefit to us all, but especially to Ava-Rose and Charlie. We chose for them both to have cochlear implants which has given them a good degree of hearing. Ava-Rose and Charlie are excelling in life and are the most wonderful children. We couldn’t be prouder of the independent, kind and caring people they have become.

Please support me by supporting SEDCU which will enable them to continue broadening and strengthening support to disadvantaged children in Uganda so that they can benefit from good quality education and realise their full potential. https://checkout.justgiving.com/bdbun8n70g

SEDCU will share regular updates of Nik's climb to Mount Everest Base Camp and hopefully with pictures, if the signal is good!
