Introducing Peter's Field Notes! Dive into the magical wilderness of Dewsall through the eyes of our brilliant groundsman Peter.
"You may have all noticed how beautiful the Spring gardens have been here at Dewsall this year. As groundsmen we’d like to take some credit for this, but humbly we are just mere chaperones, pinning back the inevitable advance and at the same time, guiding its colour towards us. Nature has by far the biggest hand in all this beauty. Just the perfect amount of sunshine and showers throughout April has really encouraged growth and cast a magical veil of colour and lush greenery around all of us.
Wherever you turn there is vibrancy, freshness and vitality. The meadow weeds in the arboretum look superb this year - a perfect backdrop for a May wedding you might say!
As a consequence we have become an oasis for wildlife too. Mistle thrushes that have been in decline around the country seem to be nesting in our vines and hedges. We have blackbirds galore and bullfinches, bats, wagtails and even barn owls! I am lucky enough to be one of the first to arrive here on a working day, and quite often stop on the driveway to take in the sights and sounds.
On Monday this week, the scene resembled a Disney movie! A Muntjac raced up the driveway ahead of me, two geese with seven goslings stood guard in the lake field. Three pheasants, seven squirrels and a rabbit all cavorting in the carpark. I mean, what is going on here! I’m expecting Snow White to appear from the barn!
There is plenty going on behind the scenes and reporting some of these, may help preserve and protect our wild corner of the Herefordshire countryside."
Stay tuned for more soon!
