Months of planning go into an event stand. The build, the AV, the product samples, the branded furniture. Then it all goes onto a truck, a plane or a ferry, and for a few days it's out of your hands.

Every logistics job looks flawless on paper. The real test is what happens when it isn't.
Last week we were contracted to move high-value equipment from the UK to Milano. Everything was locked in — driver allocated, van prepped, carnet in hand, Eurotunnel booked, every customs formality signed off. Kit collected from the client early doors, driver en route to the tunnel.
Then our ops team took a call. Our driver's father had been rushed to hospital.
At Handdels London, our priorities aren't complicated: family and health come first. Always. No load outweighs that.
But someone has to take charge — because the person in the middle of it can't always think straight. Our Operations Manager, Joseph, did exactly that. Calm, clear, decisive: "Turn around at Folkestone and drive home." And while our driver headed back, Joseph was already standing up the backup.
We build redundancy into every job. Plan B is never an afterthought — it's designed in from the start. (And Iain, our CEO, is always Plan C.)
Drivers swapped, paperwork updated, kit transferred. Then, minutes into the new leg, our replacement driver Boggy heard a hiss — a nail in the tyre. Straight to the garage, repaired, back on the road.
The client was kept informed at every step. And because the redundancy was already there, we still delivered in Milano on time — with crews simultaneously live on the ground in Germany and the Netherlands.
The lesson isn't that things go wrong. Things always go wrong. The difference is whether your business is built to absorb it.

September 11, 2001 — the logistics of a city that refused to freeze
Twenty-five years ago today, Lower Manhattan faced a problem with no rehearsal: how do you move half a million people off an island when the bridges are closed, the subways are down, and the streets are gone under a mile of dust?
The answer came from the water.
Within minutes of the U.S. Coast Guard putting out a call for "all available boats," a spontaneous flotilla of ferries, tugs, fishing boats, dinner cruisers and private craft converged on the seawall. Over roughly nine hours, an estimated 500,000 people were carried to safety across the Hudson — the largest waterborne evacuation in history, larger than Dunkirk. No manifest. No plan. Just crews making decisions in real time and moving people who needed moving.
Above the city, another unprecedented operation unfolded. For the first time ever, U.S. airspace was fully closed, and controllers guided some 4,500 aircraft safely to the ground in a matter of hours.
And in the months that followed came one of the most demanding recovery efforts ever undertaken: roughly 1.8 million tons of debris cleared from a 16-acre site, carried out by barge around the clock, catalogued and sifted with extraordinary care.
We work in logistics because moving things — safely, quickly, under pressure — matters. On days like today, we're reminded of what that work looks like at its most human: ordinary people with boats, radios and trucks, choosing to show up.
Today we remember the lives lost, the first responders, and everyone who answered the call.
