Thanks everyone who turned up despite the terrible forecast and it turned out not too bad in the end. If you enjoyed the event please leave us a review on the website - it all helps and we need to keep the numbers up if the event is to continue.

Finally, entries are already open for next year's HH on 13th June 2026, so why not set yourself a target and get in there now.

Don't let Killhope make you Cross!
Killhope Cross, at 2057 ft, ranks equal 3rd in our list of Britain’s highest roads and equal highest in England. It marks the county boundary between Durham and Cumberland, and the summit retains its cross marker, thought to be of medieval origin. Perhaps more importantly for Skyrider entrants, its layby hosts our final feed station, a welcome sight after all the climbs undertaken since Nenthead.

The cross has Grade II listed status, so please resist the temptation to sit down on it while eating your flapjack, no matter how inviting the prospect may seem.

Great News! Common Bank returns.
After an enforced diversion last year, riders on the Classic and Skyrider routes are back on track this year. Forced to close after flooding damage in 2024, Common Bank (the hill above Elk's Head) has just reopened, and we can once again follow the wheel of Lyndsay Jamieson https://www.haydonhundred.co.uk/contents/2922-jamieson
whose memory we salute every year.
We often use the photo below to illustrate the beauties of the route, It's the view from the top of the hill, overlooking the beautiful West Allen Valley and the spire of Whitfield Church. Now you can do this again as normal, but do still pay attention to the hill - unlike Lyndsay.

Discover the Highs of the 2025 Haydon Hundred

Langdon Fell, at 2057 ft, shares Killhope’s 3rd place in our list of Britain’s highest roads and is the highest in England. It marks the boundary between the upper reaches of Teesdale and Weardale. Take a moment to look at the quarry at the summit and marvel at how the workers got there every day.

Skyriders can use the long descent to reflect on the climb of Killhope to come

One Flue over the ....

After dropping down from Black Hill, riders on the Classic and Skyrider routes might be forgiven for thinking that they had left the Pennine summits behind – but not quite. This hill, known locally as 'the chimneys', returns you firmly to the high moors and panoramic views.

The chimneys themselves and their associated flue tunnels were built to disperse the fumes from the Allen Smelt Mills, some two miles below in the valley. They served the dual purpose of removing the toxic emissions and acting as condensers to recover even more of the lead and silver extracted during the smelting process.

Black Hill, at 1998 ft, ranks 6th in our list of Britain’s highest roads.
There are other summits of this name, but this one has a road over the top. It forms the highest point on the C2C Cycle Route and walkers and runners on the gruelling Allendale Challenge cross the road here on the way to the summit off Killhope Law.
Art enthusiasts may remember that it was originally proposed as the site for James Turrell’s Skyspace installation, eventually built in Kielder Forest. It might have provided a welcome break for riders on our Classic and Skyrider routes, who both have to pass here.

Yad Moss, at 1962 ft, ranks 9th in our list of Britain’s highest roads. In old Pennine dialect Yad was a name for a pit pony, a look back to the area’s lead mining heritage; possibly this area was where they may have wandered when above ground.
Today you are unlikely to see any ponies, but in the winter months you are quite likely to see skiers, on what is England’s longest ski tow. This was set up in 1975 to take advantage of the North Pennine winters, and is a magnet for skiers whenever the conditions are right. We hope that on 7th June the weather will be more favourable for cyclists, and that riders on our Skyrider route need only look out for ponies.

Signal Your Intent on the Stanegate

The top of the Stanegate is by no means the highest summit on the Haydon Hundred, even if it may feel like that after a long climb into the wind. Even so, the view from Barcombe Fell is unrivalled, so much so that the Romans used it for a signal station, where soldiers from Vindolanda could send messages across the northern frontier. The Long Stone on the top came much later than Roman times, but the panoramas are the same.
