“You’re No Good” was written by Clint Ballard Jr. and has a complex recording history involving several distinct versions, primarily split between the soul/R&B tradition and the rock/pop covers.

Dee Dee Warwick (1963): The song was first recorded by Warwick for Jubilee Records with production by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Despite the prestigious production team, this version did not chart.

Betty Everett (1963): Vee-Jay Records A&R man Calvin Carter acquired the song for artist Dee Clark but deemed the lyrics too negative for a male singer. He passed it to Betty Everett, who recorded it at Chess Records in Chicago with Maurice White on drums. Released in late 1963, this version became the first hit, reaching #51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on Cashbox’s R&B chart.

The Swinging Blue Jeans (1964): This British band released a version that switched the gender perspective, which became the best-known rendition in the UK, reaching #3 on the UK charts and #97 in the US.

Perfect for a gloomy day, and Friday next week I’ll be playing records at a stone’s throw from Poly Styrene’s former home (where there’s a blue plaque in her honour) won’t be playing much punk (it’s gonna be soul / boogaloo / funk / rock n roll) but might have to bring this for the occasion
