Behind The Scenes.

I love an early bird photographer! We got to chat to Caroline while we were setting up and she caught some great shots of our makeshift workspace on the floor.

When I was young my grandparents lived in a house with sprawling gardens, every journey home to the city was on a car filled with scrumped apples from the local orchard & bundles of flowers my grandmother had collected that morning, wrapped in a wet copy of the local paper. Bringing their Herefordshire garden into our little city flat always made it feel like home.
Far from the city in the wild of Wales I still feel the wholesome warmth of a car filled with flowers, collected from local growers or big city markets, driven up to the doors of the most beautiful venues, they have quite a different journey but pieced together into wild meadows and cottage garden scapes, they feel like homage paid to the thorny roses that tore through soggy newspapers & a childhood of overgrown flowerbeds lovingly shared.

There’s nothing like a wedding that uses the full box of crayons.
Colour blocking in weddings was huge in the late 70’s & 80’s, bridesmaids each having a colour and matching everything. The rainbow bridal party was in & then…not so in, the next generation of brides turning their noses up at the bridal fashion of Scott & Charlene’s major TV moment but with the return of the mullet & Kate Bush came all the colours. The 80’s are back and aren’t they pretty!

Mim & Freddie

Some marriages start on a wedding day, a fast paced story, the getting to know yous happen while planning. Cake tasting leads to stories about childhood summers, picking wild seaside strawberries. Table planning exposes all the family feuds and troublesome relatives from out of town. They are the start of stories.

Then there are the wedding days that make a marriage formal, people who know each other completely, who coexist and are a part of each other’s story long before rings are shared. These weddings are not discovery but celebration of all that they have discovered together, they are days laced with inside jokes and rambling antidotes & songs that tell stories of trying to keep each other awake on long journeys or twisted ankles on dance floors and A&E nights. The wine from that little shop in Brixton where too much was tasted and blackberries because of getting stuck in brambles in Devon. They celebrate not a coming together but the people they have become together, on these days you feel not that you are at the start of a love story but right in the belly of it.

Mim & Freddie’s was one of these days, together almost 10 years, the sweet excitement of a new chapter and the years of love that made it so much their day in every element.

From Portmeirion to Pencei.

One of the hardest parts of exhibiting for wedding fayres or venue open days are the displays that sit on my kitchen island afterwards, made to be centre stage they tend to be background to spagetti bolognese and appreciated only really when waiting for the kettle to boil.
This year Portmeirion open day coincided with St David’s Day and I couldn’t resist bringing the brightness of daffodils and mimosa to the dusty blue, little Italy. While ordering flowers and sketching out ideas on a rainy afternoon in Pencei, it occurred to me that there might be a few places outside of my kitchen where these flowers could find their stage.

The Details & The Artists

The beauty of a wedding is all about the love story. Over time the day gets fuzzy and becomes a hazy memory, the details a little lost in all the days that follow.
Photos like these filling old albums are so transportive, the tiny moments captured. Folding open a family photo album you can hear the sound of champagne filling a glass, smell the powder and blush of a sponge and feel the fabric of a napkin. The butterflies of rings exchanging and the nerves building as buttons are slowly done and the echo of an empty room, filled with flowers, waiting for the love story to be told.

The artists that work to make these moments are such a gift , bringing beauty, the elegance, tumbling curls, the pop of a cork, my floristry assistant the bubbling sound of vases being filled.
setting the scene and filling the albums.
