Third Manchester library of the day, John Rylands to see John James Audobon’s, Birds of America.
Featured heavily in the plot of the recent BBC comedy, Small Prophets and another Quarry Bank connection.
Audubon travelled to England in the early 1800s looking for wealthy benefactors to sponsor his ambitious project. He visited Quarry Bank twice and stayed with the Greg family in Quarry Bank House, giving drawing lessons to the Greg daughters. We think the Gregs did sponsor the book and it’s rumoured they owned a copy, although there is no trace of it now - a pity as copies are worth around £4 million!
The elephant folio book features life sized paintings- hence the larger birds depicted in the strange contorted positions.

Exactly one year ago tomorrow, I returned to work, on crutches, after being off for two months when I broke my hip.
Tomorrow morning, I will complete my Walk 100 Miles in May in aid of Prostate Cancer Research UK.
I know it’s not an Iron Man challenge but I am still very proud of myself.
A great bloke I know has recently been diagnosed and as well as raising awareness, money and getting fitter, I did it to support him.
Over 12,000 men a year die of prostate cancer.
